In the seemingly obligatory casting move of grabbing international talent for local films, The IT Crowd star Chris O’Dowd has been added to the credits of the upcoming Australian musical The Sapphires.
IF reports that O’Dowd will star as “Dave – an Irish roustabout who “sees the light” through four young Aboriginal women”. O’Dowd will alongside Deborah Mailman, Jessica Mauboy, Shari Sebbens and Miranda Tapsell in an adaptation of the successful stage play of the same name. O’Dowd was last seen on the big screen in the successful comedy Bridesmaids, showing his familiarity working with large ensemble casts of women.
Based on a true story, the film follows four young women plucked from the obscurity of an Aboriginal mission in 1968 by a talent scout (O’Dowd) who crafts them into Australia’s first answer to The Supremes.
The film will be adapted by Keith Thompson (Clubland) and playwright Tony Briggs, reworking his own stage production.
Shooting for The Sapphires begins next month in the Murray River and Sydney, followed by a shoot in Vietnam. The film will be produced by Ghostlight Pictures and released via Hopscotch.
