Luc Besson has been in the credits as a producer (Columbiana, The Source) several times a year, but outside the little-screened (at least in Australia) Arthur and the Invisibles series of films, it has been a while since we have seen him helm a major production. This one seems set for awards contention.
The Lady of the title is Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese opposition politician who had remained under house arrest for 15 years, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 and has recently been the subject of an international media campaign. Besson’s Aung San Suu Kyi will be played by Michelle Yeoh (Kung Fu Panda 2), with David Thewlis (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2) as her husband Michael Aris.
The Lady does not currently have an Australian release date.
