The world may have forgotten about this series, but there’s a sequel nonetheless. Having the stamina of an undead creature, Kate Beckinsale once again paints on the latex to fight a war against the Lycans, only this time its also against the humans and involves a hybrid child as well. Does this mean she runs good on regular gas as well as electricity? We may never know.
The second trailer gives us a little more plot information than the first teaser, in which we only really learned that she was looking for somebody named Michael. The official synopsis describes the film as follows: “The vampire warrioress Selene, escapes imprisonment to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species.
Is there still an audience out there for kick-ass vampires, or has Twilight forever ensured that our fangers must forever remain broody, wistful and all shiny in the sunlight? The last film, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, only too $91 million worldwide at the box office, but the production costs were relative low at $35 million. Perhaps this is just another quick cash cow.
Underworld: Awakening is released on 20 January 2012 in 3D and IMAX in the US, and on 26 January 2012 in Australia from Sony.
