TrekMovie has confirmed that the sequel to J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek, with the working title of Star Trek 2, is due for a production start on 15 January 2012 with the aim of a 2013 release.
While previous reports indicated that there was no script, Orci confirmed with the same source that the script has “been done for a while” and that he and co-writers Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof are currently working on the third draft. Orci added that “rewriting is a good thing which normally makes the script better. We like to keep pushing the script, even if no one gives us notes.”
The site went on to say that most of the design work has been completed, and that director J.J. Abrams is picking locations, including a personal visit to Hawaii for a “jungle planet”. Shooting is also said to include a “museum in Los Angeles”which will be used to stand in for a “famous Star Trek location.”
Recently Variety reported that Benicio del Toro was up for the role of a Star Trek villain, but no confirmation has been made of any non-returning cast members.
