Adding another flavour to Sydney’s flourishing festival scene, the Persian International Film Festival will kick off on 23 February 2012, and showcase those films from Afghanistan, Iran and Tajikistan that are gaining international recognition.
For the debut year, the four day program will include six feature films and a number of shorts accompanying them, many of which are Australian premieres. The festival opens with Tina Gharavi’s acclaimed I Am Nasrine (2011, Iran/UK), and will be accompanied by two Iranian short films.
Other films include Mohsen Abdolvahab ’s Please Don’t Disturb (2010, Iran), Majid Barzegar ’s Rainy Seasons (2009, Iran), Shahram Mokri ’s Ashkan, The Charmed Ring and Other Stories (2009, Iran) and Seddiq Barmak ’s Opium War (2008, Afghanistan). The closing night film will be a special presentation of Asghar Farhadi ’s internationally acclaimed A Separation (2011, Iran), a film that is winning virtually every ‘Best Foreign Language’ category across the board, including a Golden Globe and an an Oscar nomination.
