It was 1999 again in Sydney today, as lines went around the block at the Event Cinemas on George Street for the Australian Premiere of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Only this time it was in 3D, and most of us were a little older.
In a testament to people’s love of Star Wars, even for what is arguably the weakest film out of the six theatrical releases, folks were turning up in everything from vintage and import t-shirts to Boba Fett helmets. It was really great to see so many parents introducing their kids to the films on the big screen, and hopefully this will lead to the other five films being released.
Of course, Fox put on a stellar red carpet, with host Merrick Watts, a small symphony orchestra playing tunes from the films and a whole lot of professionals dressed up as their favourite characters. Thankfully, Jar Jar was nowhere to be seen.
We need to thank Fox and Lantern Group for inviting us to the Premiere, and allowing us some time on the red carpet with the guests. Our full review of the film and the 3D experience will follow this week.
