Twentieth Century Fox has announced that the troubled production on The Wolverine will be going ahead, with a planned 26 July 2013 official release date in the US.
When we spoke with star Hugh Jackman last year, on his press tour for Real Steel, “We’re doing Les Mis[erables], and Wolverine straight after. We’re kind of ready to go now, but Les Mis precluded us starting. So, it’s been a frustrating year, because we’ve been waiting to go, and we had various mishaps”. With Les Miserable due out later this year, we can assume that production will begin on The Wolverine sometime in the coming months.
Directed by James Mangold, with a script from Christopher McQuarrie and most recently updated by Mark Bomback, the film is said to be loosely based on Frank Miller (Sin City, The Spirit) and Chris Claremont’s 1982 comic book arc Wolverine, which sees the main man travel to Japan, where he falls for Mariko, the daughter of a Japanese crime lord.
It looks like 2013’s summer will give 2012 a run for its money, with heavy-hitters including Man of Steel, Steven Spielberg’s Robopocalypse, the Star Trek sequel and Iron Man 3 already announced for this period.
