Vulutre has revealed that it’s time to start the music again, with a deal between Disney and The Muppets director James Bobin and original co-writer Nicholas Stoller to pen a sequel. Given that The Muppets just won an Academy Award for the song “Man or Muppet“, this is unsurprising.
The article is quick to point out that Jason Segel has not signed on for this yet, and his commitments to the eighth season of How I Met Your Mother – along with the promotion of Five Year Engagement (due out this coming April in the US, and 17 May in Australia) and Judd Apatow’s This Is Forty (7 June in Australia) – would probably preclude him from heavy participation.
When we spoke to Segel last year, he was satisfied to have simply returned the characters to the big screen. “My goal was to set the stage for the Muppets to do whatever they want. So I would love to see the Muppets doing movies, and TV shows and all that, but my feeling is that I serve at the pleasure of Kermit”.
Past Muppets films have very rarely been connected to the previous ones anyway, but the source reports there’s still a chance for a Segel appearance. The Muppets love a cameo, after all.
