DC Entertainment has been doing some of their best work in original animation, and the latest is an adaptation of Frank Miller’s classic 1986 story The Dark Knight Returns. Now MTV Geek has released a first look at the forthcoming original film.
Released as two films, the story features an aging Bruce Wayne (voiced by Robocop‘s Peter Weller) who comes out of retirement to fight a new breed of crime with a female Robin (Ariel Winter) by his side.
What is striking about the trailer is just how much of the tale was borrowed by the Nolans for The Dark Knight Rises, from the broad idea of Batman returning after a decade to Alfred’s dialogue about the mutant leader being “in his prime, he will kill you”. We hope this earlier work doesn’t suffer in comparison, as this looks magnificent, and is in the capable hands of Jay Olivia, who has previously directed episodes of Young Justice, and was a storyboard artist on Batman: Year One and the upcoming Man of Steel.
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 is released in the US on DVD, Blu-ray and Digital Download on 25 September, and in Australia on 10 October 2012.
