The UK’s The Daily Mail has claimed that Emily Blunt and Ruth Wilson are racing for the role of Ms. Marvel, who they say is set to appear in the untitled Avengers sequel from Joss Whedon.
British actresses Emily Blunt and Ruth Wilson are head-to-head in a race for the most sought-after new female role in Hollywood.
Emily, 29, below, star of The Young Victoria, and Ruth, 30, from TV’s Luther, are both hotly tipped to play superhero Ms Marvel in Avengers 2, the sequel to Avengers Assemble, one of the biggest box office hits of all time.
The new movie is due to begin shooting next year. Whoever is chosen will star alongside Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr and Chris Hemsworth, who will reprise their comic-book hero roles.
There’s a little bit of validity to this, although the “shooting next year” is clearly incorrect, given that the film is not due out in cinemas until 2015 and the various cast members will be tied up with Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Solider between now and then. However, the inclusion of Ms. Marvel would make sense in terms of the Marvel Cinematic Universe expanding into the cosmic with Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014. Ms. Marvel’s fictional origin sees US Air Force officer Carol Danvers is caught in the explosion of an alien Kree device, home of Captain Marvel, and gaining some of his powers as a result.
A long-serving member of The Avengers, Danvers recently took on the mantle of Captain Marvel in the comics continuity to great success and wide media coverage. She serves as a member of the The Avengers in the animated series The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
