Revealed back at the San Diego Comic Con in July, Disney has now given Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man an official release date of 6 November 2015 in the US. This will be the second Marvel Cinematic Universe film released that year, following Joss Whedon’s The Avengers 2 on 1 May 2015. So does this make it Phase 2 or Phase 3?
Very little has been revealed about Wright’s take on the film, except that he has co-scripted with Joe Cornish (Attack the Block), who he also worked with on The Adventures of Tintin. The character first appeared back in the pages of Tales to Astonish in the 1960s, but has undergone several changes and incarnations since then. However, the assumption is that this take will be on Henry ‘Hank’ Pym, a scientist who becomes a superhero after discovering that a chemical he created can alter his size.
The timing of the next film means that he may not appear in the next Avengers film, but it’s a fairly safe bet that he’ll be teased in it. The next two Marvel Studios films, Iron Man 3 (25 April 2013 in Australia) and Thor: The Dark World (8 November 2013) will also be released in 3D, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier (4 April 2014) and the space-bound Guardians of the Galaxy (1 August 2014) will fill in the gap between now and then. Plenty of chances for Ant-Man to make a post-credits cameo.
