Variety reports that Frank Grillo will play the villainous character of Crossbones in the sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier, due out in cinemas on 4 April 2014.
The character was introduced into the Marvel Comics in the 1980s as a henchman to Red Skull (played in the first film by Hugo Weaving), and was involved in the assassination of Captain America during the massive Civil War storyline in 2006-2007. We know the film will be based on the Winter Soldier story arc, which shot out of this arc and features the return of Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), who was thought to be killed in Captain America: The First Avenger. It’s now conceivable that this new film could involved elements of that Civil War arc, especially given the G-Men seem to be making moves against Tony Stark in Iron Man 3. Additional elements could also come into play during Thor: The Dark World in the interim.
Grillo has recently appeared in End of Watch and The Grey, and is perhaps best known over the last few years from TV’s The Gates. He will be seen soon in Gangster Squad and Zero Dark Thirty.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier will be directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo from a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. It will star Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America, alongside Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders and Scarlett Johansson. Anthony Mackie has also been confirmed to appear as Captain America’s ally The Falcon.
Is it possible Marvel Studios can do no wrong?
