Oscars: 21 Animated Films Submitted for 85th Academy Awards

Academy Award StatueThe Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released the names of the 21 films officially submitted for top animated feature consideration for the 85th Academy Awards.

As there are more than 16 films nominated for the Oscar this year, the Academy may nominate a maximum of 5 nominees for the Animated Feature Film category. Last year, 18 films qualified for the Oscar race in this category.

The Oscar nominations will be announced on Thursday 10 January 2013. The 85th Academy Awards will be broadcast live on “Oscar Sunday”, or 24 February 2013 to the rest of the world. That will be the 25 February 2013 here in Australia. They will be hosted by Seth MacFarlane.

Despite its quality, there’s a fairly safe bet that Pixar’s Brave will make the cut, alongside Frankenweenie and Focus Feature’s ParaNorman. Indeed, with strong advance buzz around Wreck-It Ralph, there’s also the possibility that this could be a very Disney-led field, even though there is a lot of love out there for Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax. However, with several films yet to receive their Oscar-qualifying runs, it is still early days yet.
