Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know that we are mere months away from the seventh (or fourth, depending on your point of view) Star Wars film. If that rock is particularly heavy, you may have also missed the fact that a second STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS trailer dropped this morning as well. That sound you heard was as if a million geek voices suddenly cried out, and just as suddenly splooshed.
The trailer needs little explanation. A mindblowingly cool crashed Star Destroyer. A familiar crushed helmet. A droid we don’t recall ever owning. A lightsaber passed from one robed individual to another. X-Wings. Jedi stuff. Lots of Stormtroopers. And some scruffy looking nerfherders we’re sure we’ve seen before.
It isn’t just the sheer number of cultural landmarks that J.J. Abrams casually ticks off in this second trailer, it’s that for the first time since 1983, we’re presented with something that feels like a Star Wars film. It’s a lived-in, gritty, frontier Western that actually seems like it came out the other side of Return of the Jedi a little worse for wear, and a little more world wearied. The [SPOILERS] appearance of Han Solo and his faithful companion Chewbacca with the line “Chewie, we’re home” might just echo the sentiments of the cinema lovers the world over who have been clamouring for something this authentic since the let-down of The Phantom Menace in 1999.
STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS is released in Australia on 17 December 2015 from Disney, and around the world on similar dates.
