‘Moulin Rouge! The Musical’ brings Baz Luhrmann’s film to stage

Moulin Rouge! The Musical

File this one under: “What Took You So Long?” Carmen Pavlovic, CEO of Global Creatures, has announced that Baz Luhrmann’s revolutionary film Moulin Rouge! will come to the theatrical stage as a new musical with a book by John Logan, directed by Alex Timbers. Come what may, work is already happening on the show, with a production time-line and opening venue will be announced at a later date. This is sure to be a spectacular, spectacular ticket when it drops.

Baz Luhrmann’s third and final film in the so-called “Red Curtain Trilogy” was released back in 2001. Starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, the film was more of a critical success than a commercial one, but has nevertheless garnerned a cult following. Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom also hit the stage in 2014, and is due to open on London’d West End later this year.

So Exciting - Moulin Rouge

“I first encountered Alex Timbers through the remarkable and inventive production of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson and the brilliance of Here Lies Love. ,” commented Luhrmann. “I immediately recognized the young director’s creative spirit and felt we shared similar sensibilities and instincts. So I’m tremendously happy to celebrate that Moulin Rouge! will be under his direction and that the book will be the creation of the gifted Tony Award-winning playwright John Logan whose writing I also admire deeply.  It’s immensely gratifying to know that a new wave of artists will be leading Moulin Rouge! into its rightful theatrical realm.”

Luhrmann’s The Get Down, a fantasy musical about the birth of hip hop set during the 1977 New York blackout, is currently streaming around the world on Netflix. (And we loved it).
