In case you’ve been living under a rock, the GHOST IN THE SHELL remake has dropped its new trailer and poster globally overnight, with Paramount Australia releasing the pair of them to a suspecting public. Directed by Rupert Sanders, the visually stunning trailer will be divisive, with ardent fans of the original manga and anime sure to ponder what this live action version offers. The film hits Australian cinemas on 30 March 2017, with the US getting it at the same time on 29 March 2017.
Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, GHOST IN THE SHELL follows Major (Scarlett Johansson), a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.
The film also features an international cast that includes ‘Beat’ Takeshi Kitano, Juliette Binoche, Michael Pitt, Pilou Asbæk, Kaori Momoi, Chin Han, Danusia Samal, Lasarus Ratuere, Yutaka Izumihara, and Tuwanda Manyimo.
OK, that looks to be taking some cues from the Mamoru Oshii movie from the mid nineties. Hopefully it won’t overreach and try to tell a story too long for its running time like that one did.
