After a long wait, Fox has finally begun casting NEW MUTANTS, the X-Men spin-off. The Fault in Our Stars helmer Josh Boone is directing the film for Fox with a screenplay he co-wrote with Knate Gwaltney.
Anya Taylor-Joy, the star of The Witch and Split, and Game of Thrones‘ Maisie Williams will star as Magik and Wolfsbane respectively. The characters have a long history with the team, one that has seen several line-up changes over the years. Magik is the younger sister of the Russian X-Man Colossus, last seen in Deadpool.
NEW MUTANTS were first created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod in 1982, and were in fact the first spin-off of many X-Men titles. The initial graphic novel premiere came off the success of Claremont’s early 1980s successes on The Uncanny X-Men. The source has not confirmed which of these characters will make it to the film. However, it is expected that characters like Cannonball/Samuel Guthrie, Mirage/Danielle Moonstar, and Sunspot/Roberto da Costa. The series would run for 100 issues an eventually lead to X-Force, another project on the slate from the Fox franchise.
Several of the New Mutants featured in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), including Blink (Fan Bingbing), Warpath (Booboo Stewart), and Sunspot (Adan Canto).
NEW MUTANTS was first announced back in April 2015, with Boone and Gwaltney attached since then. It has aplanned release date of 13 April 2018.
