Disney has released the trailer for A WRINKLE IN TIME, an adaptation of the 1963 science fantasy novel written by American writer Madeleine L’Engle.
From Selma director Ava DuVernay, the film tells the story of Meg (Storm Reid), who is sent by three beings (Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kalin) into space following the disappearance of her scientist father (Chris Pine). She is joined by friend Calvin, played by Australia’s Levi Miller.
The book was notorious for its Christian overtones, in a similar way to C.S. Lewis and the Narnia novels. Yet it is also a work of science fantasy, and it deals with some massive ideas for a kids book. Conformity, good versus evil, and some seriously inventive takes on dimensional travel. Take, for example, a character’s realisation that “matter and energy are the same thing, that size is an illusion, and that time is a material substance.” Mind blown.
It is due for release in March 2018 from Disney. With a massive cast and a smart concept, here’s hoping its success will lead to more adaptations from L’Engle’s quintet of books.
