Tropfest, the world’s largest short film festival, has called for entries for the 2018 competition. This year the signature item is ‘rose.’
The Tropfest ‘main event’ returns on Saturday 17 February 2018 to Parramatta Park, thanks to multiple year partnerships with CGU Insurance, Parramatta Park Trust City of Parramatta and Western Sydney University. Other satellite Tropfest events – including TropTalks – will take place in the days leading up to the big night.
Amateur or pro, Tropfest is open to anyone with a camera and a story to tell. All you have to do is start shooting. Entries open for submission through the Tropfest website on October 15 2017 and close 11 January.
Like a rose in winter, Tropfest fought its way back from the brink in the last couple of years. As recently as 2015, the festival had to dig itself out of “a six-figure hole in the ledgers” according to Luke Buckmaster at The Guardian.
Tropfest has also consistently been under flack for its choice of winners, from accusations of plagiarism to 2014’s transphobic piece that won the top slot. Other’s found the 2017 choice disheartening, as it once again awarded an industry veteran (in this case, Matt Day) rather than promoting new voices. Here’s hoping 2018 smells more like roses.
