Mamoru Hosoda‘s MIRAI OF THE FUTURE (未来のミライ Mirai no Mirai) is getting a theme song from none other than veteran Japanese recording artist Tatsuro Yamashita. The news comes from the film’s official site and social media (via Crunchyroll).
“I am honored. I’ll do my best,” said Yamashita in a statement. “The wonderful work combines home drama and fantasy, and Mr. Hosoda unique style.”
“When we started making an animated film about a child on a hero’s journey” adds Hosada, “I asked Mr. Yamashita to write a fun song for that. The completed song was a tremendous masterpiece with a strict perfection. I think that it is the highest grade gift from Mr. Yamashita for all children.”
While the songs are yet to be named or previewed, we can get a sense of what it might sound like from the not too distant past. Yamashita previously worked with Hosoda on the incomparable Summer Wars, providing the song “Bokura no Natsu no Yume” (僕らの夏の夢 or “Our Summer Dream”).
MIRAI OF THE FUTURE is one of our most anticipated animated films of the year. Since Summer Wars, Mamoru Hosoda’s output has earned him a massive reputation of being ‘the next Miyazaki.’ Not for nothing: those films have included Wolf Children and The Boy and the Beast.
MIRAI OF THE FUTURE hits Japanese cinemas on 20 July 2018 from Studio Chizu.
