Rouge your knees and roll your stockings down. Sydney is getting three world-class musicals over the next two years as the Australian premiere of WAITRESS comes to town alongside revivals of CHICAGO and SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER.
Minister for Tourism and Major Events Adam Marshall and Minister for the Arts Don Harwin said the three musicals were secured exclusively for Sydney by the NSW Government.
Based on the 2007 film of the same, WAITRESS is a local version of the 2015 musical with music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles and a book by Jessie Nelson. It was nominated for four Tony Awards this year, including Best Musical.
Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse’s CHICAGO is one of the most famous musicals of all time, containing the song “All That Jazz.” It was made into a film in 2002, and has toured around the world multiple times since its debut in 1975.
Finally, SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER is also based on the film, which in turn was based on Nik Cohn’s 1975 New York Magazine article “Tribal Rites of the New Saturday Night.” The original London production debuted in 1998 with music from the Bee Gees, and was last seen in Australia during the 2016 Melbourne run.
CHICAGO will open at the Sydney Lyric Theatre in mid 2019; SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER will open at the Capitol Theatre around August 2019 and the Australian premiere of WAITRESS hit the stage at the Sydney Lyric Theatre in mid 2020.
