The Reel Bits: 30 Anticipated Films of 2020

Most anticipated films for 2020

Chills and thrills

If there’s one thing I’ve enjoyed about the last few years of horror films, it’s the return of the franchise. Some of these have been brand new outings (like Happy Death Day), while others have seen old characters come back from the dead. 2020 has a little of each: Halloween now has a dozen entries, while A Quiet Place could be the newest franchise to quietly rule the roost. Throw in new films by Christopher Nolan and Edgar Wright and this section ticks off both the ‘thrill’ and ‘chill’ components of its title.

Halloween Kills

After bringing back both Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode (and the original timeline) with the unexpected success of Halloween, the creative team of David Gordon Green, Danny McBride and Scott Teems are doing it all again with a film that is both the twelfth instalment in the franchise and the middle chapter in a new trilogy set to conclude in 2021. Got it?

Last Night in Soho

Whether you are into his brand of filmmaking or not, Edgar Wright is always someone to watch. With his latest project, he teams up to co-script a psychological horror film with 1917‘s Krysty Wilson-Cairns. The massive cast includes Thomasin McKenzie, Anya Taylor-Joy, Matt Smith, Diana Rigg, and Terence Stamp.

Tenet

We don’t know a massive amount about Christopher Nolan’s next film (do we ever?), but it apparently concerns an agent being brought back to life to prevent World War III. His cast includes (deep breath) John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Michael Caine, and Kenneth Branagh.

A Quiet Place: Part II

Following the unexpectedly sublime 2018 horror hit, The Fantastic Four – Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe and writer/director John Krasinski – return for more silent thrills. Joined by Cillian Murphy and Djimon Hounsou, the family must now survive the horrors of the outside world. *cocks shotgun*
