Straight from the salubrious confines of Marrickville, the greatest country in the world, the Sydney Underground Film Festival busts out and goes online and national for 2020.
Joining the ranks of the streaming film festivals in this most strange of years, SUFF 2020 will contain 100 short films from 20 different countries and run across Thursday 10 September – Sunday 20 September. That’s over three times longer than usual. Be ye ready for that much weirdness?
NIMIC, from Greek Weird Wave leader Yorgos Lanthimos (Dogtooth, Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Favourite). It played as part of a sold-out international shorts bundle at MIFF this year.
Featured showcases include Ozploit, Sh!t Scared for horror shorts, LSD Factory’s suite of experimental films and Late Night Cartoons for the whacked-out kids in all of us. Other highlights include the Berlinale-premiering Stump the Guesser, a fantasy comedy short from directors Evan Johnson, Galen Johnson, Guy Maddin.
SUFF 2020 is also bringing back the TAKE48 Film Challenge, a 48-hour film challenge, which will now be open to international submissions.
Of course, just when we thought we were coming to terms with the program, the press release threw up a description of the Love/Sick short DEEP CLEAN, which apparently “shows just how much fun one man can have with a vacuum.” Getting some serious Chuck Palahniuk Guts vibes off that. Consider us appalled, disgusted and ready with our ticket in hand.
Speaking of which, a single ticket will be $10, with the complete online Festival pass available for $55, allowing audiences to watch the full Festival offering at any time across its duration. Sounds like a good incentive to stay indoors and watch a lot of movies. After all, it’s easier to remain socially distant while staying underground.
Full details of the films and tickets are all available at the SUFF website.
