If any one filmmaker can be credited with raising the international profile of Hong Kong‘s art cinema, it’s Wong Kar-wai.
This year, the Sydney Film Festival and Melbourne’s ACMI have joined forces to showcase 11 of the director’s films. Starting from this weeked in Sydney, you can catch them at the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW) (16-31 January 2021) and the Dendy Cinemas Newtown (19 January-18 February 2021).
Beginning with his feature debut As Tears Go By (1988), a film that critics have compared with Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets, the program covers all 10 features where Wong is a credited director. This also includes a director’s cut of The Hand, a segment from the anthology film Eros that also featured Steven Soderbergh and Michelangelo Antonioni.
Other films screening include Days of Being Wild (1990), Chungking Express (1994), Fallen Angels (1995), Happy Together (1997), In The Mood For Love (2000), 2046 (2004), My Blueberry Nights (2007), Ashes of Time: Redux (1994/2008) and his most recent film to date, The Grandmaster (2013).
Tickets are available through the Sydney Film Festival website as individual outings or an 11-film package. The films will also be screened in Melbourne at ACMI Cinemas (11 – 27 February 2021) and tour select Australian cities across Summer and Autumn 2021.
