NYAFF 2022: New York Asian Film festival announces opening film, first honouree

Fast Feel and Love

It’s the most wonderful time of the year: festival season. The New York Asian Film Festival, due to run from 15-28 July this year, marks the 20th anniversary of the festival.

The festival will open with Thailand’s FAST & FEEL LOVE. Director Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit takes us on a journey into the world…of competitive cup-stacking! When a world champion of sport stacking (Nat Kitcharit) is dumped by his long-time girlfriend, he has to learn basic adulting skills in order to live alone and take care of himself.

Previous films from Thamrongrattanarit include Mary Is Happy, Mary Is HappyDie Tomorrow and Happy Old Year. It marks the second time that a Thai film has opened the fest, following 2017’s Bad Genius.

The other big news is that Thamrongrattanarit will be joined at Lincoln Center on opening night by his leading actress, Urassaya “Yaya” Sperbund, who is being honored with the Screen International Rising Star award.

NYAFF is a one-of-a-kind celebration of films from across Asia and the Asian American experience. Each year it showcases films from Japan, China, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Taiwan, the USA and even Kazakhstan. We’ve been covering them for the last few years, and the only problem we’ve ever had is fitting in all of the wonderful content they serve up every year.

You can find more on the official NYAFF website and all of our past and future coverage right here.
