When we last saw Miranda July around these parts, it was with her disarming debut feature Me and You and Everyone We Know back in 2005. Miranda July is a performance artist a performance artist who chose her last name based on the month that month that most facilitates her creativity, and her first film was largely compared with Todd Solondz’s Happiness in its frank depictions of adults, children and sexuality.
In The Future, she tells the story of a thirty-something couple who, on deciding to adopt a stray cat, change their perspective on life, literally altering the course of time and testing their faith in each other and themselves.
This exclusive new trailer comes to us courtesy of Apple Trailers, bless their cotton socks.
The Future is playing in competition at the Sydney Film Festival in June 2011, and is due for release in US theatres on 29 July 2011 from Roadside Attractions.
Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides had its premiere at Disneyland yesterday, so now the House of Mouse will be even more generous with the extended clips from the forthcoming film in this highly successful series. The first of these was released immediately following the screening.
The clip goes for over two minutes and features a nice bit of interplay between Captain Jack (Johnny Depp), Blackbeard (Ian McShane) and Angelica (Penélope Cruz). It may also see the franchise come full circle as its antics begin to be an inspiration for their own theme park ride.
As the first lengthy look at any material from the newest movie, it is fair to say that this clip contains SPOILERS. Ye be fairly warned, mateys.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is released in Australia on 19 May 2011 from Disney.
Hot on the heels of the three character trailers for Banshee, Havok and Beast released yesterday, Fox has unveiled the latest set of clips from the hotly anticipated comic-book prequel X-Men: First Class, this time for the shape-shifting Mystique.
This clip features the character of Mystique, played as the villain by Rebecca Romijn in the original X-Men films, is the shape-shifting temptress and future hench-person of the big bad Magneto (Michael Fassbender). The young version of the blue Mystique/Raven Darkholme is played by “it girl” Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone), and the clips feature a budding relationship between her and Hank McCoy (aka Beast). We also get a glimpse of the mentor role that Magneto will eventually play in her life.
X-Men: First Class is released in Australia on 2 June 2011 from Fox.
X-Men: First Class is almost upon us, and Marvel and Fox have released three new character trailers for the forthcoming film: for Banshee, Havoc and Beast.
The trailers to date have given us the merest fumes of what Matthew Vaugh’s (Kick Ass) version of the X-Men will look like, and these clips (courtesy of MTV) give us our first extended look at scenes from the film.
The first of these features Caleb Landry Jones (TV’s Friday Night Lights) as Sean Cassidy (aka Banshee), the mutant with the power of a sonic scream.
The second trailer above is for Havoc, also known by his human name of Alex Summers (not to be confused with Scott Summers/Cyclops, portrayed in the first three X-Men films by James Marsden and brother to Alex in the Marvel comics). Played by Lucas Till (Battle: Los Angeles), his powers manifest as plasma beams that he has difficulty controlling. How difficult? See the clip above.
Last, but not least – Beast! Portrayed by Kelsey Grammer and lots of digital makeup in X:Men – The Last Stand, this is his origin story showing his painful transformation from geeky man of learning to big fuzzy blue know-it-all with a heart of gold. This time out he is played by Nicholas Hoult, a seasoned veteran at just 21 years of age. Making his mark on the big screen in About a Boy (he was the boy), he has gone from boy to man in such manly films as The Weather Man, A Single Man and now X-Men.
X-Men: First Class is released in Australia on 2 June 2011 from Fox.
Disney (via Yahoo) has released the first clip from the forthcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, bringing Johnny Depp back to the role he last played in 2007.
Due out in just a few weeks almost everywhere around the world, and most importantly for us here in Australia on May 19, the clip features a first look at some of the action and comedy from the film. Featuring Johnny Depp as Captain Jack and Geoffrey Rush in a massive powdered wig, the very brief clip sees Jack in the middle of a rousing escape plan.
The clip comes without any context, but features a very familiar callback to the kinds of running and bumbling action that we were first introduced back to back in 2003 in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. In this installment, director Rob Marshall (Chicago) takes over from trilogy helmer Gore Verbinski (Rango).
Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Rob Marshall, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” captures the fun, adventure and humor that ignited the hit franchise—this time in Disney Digital 3D™. Johnny Depp returns to his iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow in an action-packed adventure. Crossing paths with the enigmatic Angelica (Penélope Cruz), he’s not sure if it’s love—or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the “Queen Anne’s Revenge,” the ship of the legendary pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know whom to fear more: Blackbeard or Angelica, with whom he shares a mysterious past. The international cast includes franchise vets Geoffrey Rush as the vengeful Captain Hector Barbossa and Kevin R. McNally as Captain Jack’s longtime comrade Joshamee Gibbs, plus Sam Claflin as a stalwart missionary and Astrid Bergès-Frisbey as a mysterious mermaid.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is released in Australia on 19 May 2011 from Disney.
With a new trailer exploding across the interwebs as we typed this, the good people at Paramount Australia have sent over a look at three new character banners for the forthcoming Michael Bay film: Bumblebee, Optimus Prime and Shockwave.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon (yes, they are still going with that title) follows on from 2009’ss Razzie Award winning Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and is based on the 1980s animated series of the same name.
You know the score: the battle between the Autobots and the Deceptacons continues, and Shia LaBeouf returns as Sam Witwicky. Sadly for the fanboys around the world, Megan Fox has dropped out of this film. For lovers of fine acting, this shouldn’t prove to be a problem.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon hits Australian cinemas on 30 June 2011 from Paramount.
Another day, another new trailer. This brand new international trailer for the forthcoming X-Men: First Class, with stacks of new footage. This new trailer comes courtesy of 20th Century Fox and Bleeding Cool.
“X-Men: First Class charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals a secret history of famous global events. Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Not archenemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to prevent nuclear Armageddon. In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.”
Excited yet? The film will star James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Rose Byrne, January Jones, Kevin Bacon, Nicholas Hoult, Jennifer Lawrence, Caleb Landry Jones, Oliver Platt, Lucas Till, Edi Gathegi, Jason Flemyng, Morgan Lily, Zoe Kravitz and Bill Bilner.
We aren’t going to go through and tell you which scenes are new, and there is a simply joy in discovering that for yourself. All we can say for sure is that this retro origin-story approach seems to be finally giving director Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass), who had been previously tapped to helm X-Men 3: The Last Stand before Brett Ratner took over, a chance to share his vision with the world.
X-Men: First Class will be released in Australia in 2 June 2011 by 20th Century Fox.
Cowboys and Aliens could be a theme for the last couple of years, with a rise of the western genre (True Grit, Meek’s Cutoff) and alien encounters (Battle: Los Angeles, Monsters, Green Lantern) alike.
Based on a 2006 graphic novel created by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg and written by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley, and with art by Luciano Lima, the film is set to star Harrison Ford, Daniel Craig and Olivia Wilde as the folks in the old west who witness an alien spacecraft impacting the Earth. That’s right: it doesn’t get much better than Indiana Jones/Han Solo, James Bond and the ‘babe’ from TRON: Legacy going up against some aliens. Jon Favreau, director of Iron Man, is behind the camera on this one.
The last time westerns were combined with sci-fi technology was the ill-fated Wild Wild West remake, which was simply wiggity-wiggity-wiggity whack. With Will Smith busy raising an army of Hollywood children (and shooting Men in Black III without a script apparently), and Kenneth Branagh tied up with his Thor junket duties, this is one western adventures that will be free from craptastic rap songs on the soundtrack. As far as we know.
Cowboys and Aliens will be released in Australia on 11 August 2011 by Paramount.
Ahoy there, mateys! Capn’ Jack is back, and this time he has a lady that is challenging his attention span. Disney has just released a brand-new featurette from the forthcoming Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides.
The clip features interviews with the cast and crew, and concentrates largely on the relationship between Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and Angelica (Penélope Cruz). We also get to see a few more clips from the film, which we thankfully only have to wait a few more weeks for. There isn’t a whole lot of new footage in there, but this is looking more promising than the original clips that were released a few weeks back had previously indicated. Fingers crossed on this one.
Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides is the first of a rumoured planned series of sequels following the end of the first trilogy with Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.

A trio of trailers have landed in our inbox, each for a tale that embodies the spirit of adventure. With Australian trailers for latest version of The Three Musketeers, the quirky Get Low and the marvelous-looking Ripper comedy Burke and Hare, it seems as though we are safe from the scourge of boredom for the time being.
The Three Musketeers
The recipient of almost 30 screen adaptations, starring everyone from Don Ameche and Gene Kelly to Michael York and Kiefer Sutherland. Proving once and for all that any idea worth filming is worth filming again (and again), Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil: Afterlife) is bringing the characters back to life in glorious 3D (of course) and bringing Logan Lerman, Ray Stevenson, Luke Evans, Christoph Waltz, Orlando Bloom, Milla Jovovich and Matthew Macfadyen with him.
Despite Mickey Mouse and Barbie® both having a crack at the Alexandre Dumas tale on the direct-to-DVD front, we haven’t seen a proper big-screen adaptation since Disney’s 1993 adaptation with Kiefer Sutherland, Chris O’Donnell, Oliver Platt, Tim Curry and a pre-winning Charlie Sheen. Does this new adaptation have the tiger-blood necessary to make this stand out in a crowded season?
Check out the trailer and decide for yourself:
The Three Musketeers is released in Australia on 12 May 2011 from Hoyts.
Get Low
For years townsfolk have been terrified of the backwoods recluse know as Felix Bush (Robert Duvall). People say he’s done all manner of unspeakable things – that he’s killed in cold blood; that he’s in league with the Devil; that he has strange powers. Then, one day, Felix rides into town with a shotgun and a wad of cash, saying he wants to buy himself a “living funeral”. Anyone who ever heard a story about him will come to tell it, while he takes it all in. Fast-talking funeral home owner Frank Quinn (Bill Murray) enlists his young apprentice Buddy (Lucas Black) to win over Felix’s business and what he discovers is that behind Felix’s surreal plan lies a very real and long-held secret that must get out.
Bill Murray has reinvented himself as an indie darling in the last few decades, from Lost in Translation, frequent appearances in Wes Anderson films and a well-placed cameo in Zombieland. Soon to star alongside Mickey Rourke and Megan Fox in Passion Play, Aaron Schneider’s 2009 film has taken its time getting to our shores, but we should be grateful that it isn’t going directly to DVD!
The 19th century black comedy, Burke and Hare featuring our own Isla Fisher, is coming to cinemas 12 May. With the basis of a true story behind it and a well known director like John Landis, the film is ‘something alternative’ this year and an antidote to the sequels and 3D movies coming out.
John Landis is no stranger to darkly comic material, and this black comedy based on the West Port serial murders certainly seems to be taking a different step to the Starring Simon Pegg (Paul) and Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings), this throwback looks like it going to be a lot of fun.
Burke and Hare arrives in Australia on 12 May 2011 from Paramount.
