    What We’ve Been Watching:

A collection of other things we’ve been watching during the week. In “Josh’s Bargain Basement” he talks about The House of the Devil.

    Feature Film Review

‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ directed by Marc Webb. It is written by James Vanderbilt, Alvin Sergent and Steve Kloves based on the Marvel comic book character created by Stan Lee & Steve Ditko. It stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Campbell Scott, Embeth Davidtz, Chris Zylka and Irrfan Khan.

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker, an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben and Aunt May. Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors, his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero. Source: Sony

Our Verdict: A fun and entertaining superhero film with some huge gaping plot holes and an overall sense of DejaVu. However, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are fantastic and share a great chemistry on screen.

Spoiler Section: 00:44:11 – 00:59:11 – Fast forward this bit if you don’t want to hear spoilers.

    What We’ve Been Watching:

A collection of other things we’ve been watching during the week. David and Richard talk about Ted and in Josh’s Bargain Basement he talks about Rising Sun.

    Feature Film Review

Brave directed by Brenda Chapman, Mark Andrews & Steve Purcell. It is written by Brenda Chapman, Mark Andrews, Steve Purcell & Irene Mecchi. It stars the voice talent of Billy Connolly, Kelly Macdonald, Emma Thompson, Julie Walters, Robbie Coltrane, Kevin McKidd & Craig Furguson.

Set in Scotland in a rugged and mythical time, “Brave” features Merida, an aspiring archer and impetuous daughter of royalty. Merida makes a reckless choice that unleashes unintended peril and forces her to spring into action to set things right. Source: Walt Disney Pictures

Our Verdict: A beautiful looking film (does Pixar know how to make an ugly film?) that falls short of the greatness that Pixar films used to be. Fun and whimsical but ultimately disappointing.

    What We’ve Been Watching:

A collection of other things we’ve been watching during the week. This week Richard gives us the low down on the films in the Sydney Film Festival.

    Feature Film Review 1

‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ directed by Rupert Sanders. It is written by Evan Daugherty, John Lee Hancock and Hossein Amini. It stars Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, Ian McShane, Sam Claflin, Ray Winstone, Nick Frost, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan and Bob Hoskins.

In a twist to the fairy tale, the Huntsman ordered to take Snow White into the woods to be killed winds up becoming her protector and mentor in a quest to vanquish the Evil Queen. Source: IMDB

Our Verdict: A strikingly beautiful film that is ultimately a mess. The film is so busy stealing scenes from other movies it completely forgets to tell a cohesive story. In what universe is Kristen Stewart the fairest of them all?

    Watch the trailer here: http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/universal/snowwhiteandthehuntsman/

    Feature Film Review 2

‘The Cabin in the Woods’ directed by Drew Goddard. It is written by Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard. It stars Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Connolly, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams, Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford and Amy Acker.

Five friends go for a break at a remote cabin in the woods, where they get more than they bargained for. Together, they must discover the truth behind the cabin in the woods. Source: IMDB

Spoiler Section: 00:42:33 – 00:54:31 – Fast forward this bit if you don’t want to hear spoilers.

Our Verdict: A clever reworking of a tired genre. Joss Whedon again proves that he is a master of genre bending. This is a must see movie.

    What We’ve Been Watching:

A collection of other things we’ve been watching during the week including Josh’s Bargain Basement.

    Feature Film Review

‘Red Tails’ directed by Anthony Hemingway and produced by George Lucas. It is written by John Ridley and Aaron McGruder based on story by John Ridley in turn based on a book by John B. Holway. It stars Terrance Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr., Nate Parker, David Oyelowo, Tristen Wilds, Elijah Kelley, Ne-Yo, Kevin Phillips, Daniela Ruah and Brian Cranston.

Italy, 1944. As the war takes its toll on Allied forces in Europe, a squadron of black pilots known as the Tuskegee Airmen are finally given the chance to prove themselves in the sky – even as they battle discrimination on the ground. It’s a tribute to the unsung heroes who rose above extraordinary challenges and ultimately soared into history. Source: 20th Century Fox

Our Verdict: A great subject matter that is given a weak treatment here. An okay first half and some amazing visual effects is let down by a poorly conceived second half and some truly terrible dialogue.

    What We’ve Been Watching:

A collection of other things we’ve been watching during the week.

    Feature Film Review 1

‘Dark Shadows’ directed by Tim Burton and written by Seth Grahame-Smith from a story by John August and Seth Grahame-Smith based on the TV series by Dan Curtis. It stars Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Chloe Grace Moretz, Bella Heathcote and Christopher Lee.

An imprisoned vampire, Barnabas Collins, is set free and returns to his ancestral home, where his dysfunctional descendants are in need of his protection. Source: IMDB

Richard’s Verdict: Tedious Tim Burton makes the film boring.

    Watch the trailer here http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/wb/darkshadows/

    Feature Film Review 2

‘Safe’ Written and directed by Boaz Yakin. It stars Jason Statham, Catherine Chan, Chris Sarandon and James Hong.

Mei, a young girl whose memory holds a priceless numerical code, finds herself pursued by the Triads, the Russian mob, and corrupt NYC cops. Coming to her aid is an ex-cage fighter whose life was destroyed by the gangsters on Mei’s trail. Source: IMDB

Our Verdict: It’s a rental at best. Decent action scenes can’t save the very 80s style cheese.

Just a reminder, because we never like to just make things easy on ourselves, our lists are not necessarily top five lists, they are more or a less a list of film recommendations within the theme of the list.

This is The Avengers week here at Geek Actually so, as a compliment to our feature film review of The Avengers on this week’s Film Actually show, we bring you our take on the new Marvel tie-in The Avengers Prelude: Fury’s Big Week by Eric Pearson & Christopher Yost, art by Luke Ross.

Our next reading assignment: Green Arrow: Year One by Andy Diggle and Jock.

The Vintage Clip of the Week this week is:
