Disney Details The Avengers US DVD and Blu-ray

After the release of the trailer for the Blu-ray yesterday, Disney has released more details for Marvel’s The Avengers, out on DVD and Blu-ray in North America on 25 September.

Announced features include an audio commentary, a music video, featurettes, deleted scenes and more, which is consistent with the ones announced last month. There will also be an app that users can download with additional features.

Australian readers note that we will be getting the DVD and Blu-ray a month earlier on 29 August 2012.

Read on for the press release (via Collider):

Also for the first time ever, fans will be able to enjoy even more of the Marvel Universe via the all-new “The Avengers Initiative: A Marvel Second Screen App.” By downloading this onto a secondary device, consumers will be able to gain unprecedented access to exclusive content building up to the home entertainment release on September 25. App owners will receive push notifications whenever new content is uploaded and available for their viewing.

  • Trailers for Marvel Cinematic Universe and The Avengers Blu-ray Sets

Trailers for Marvel Cinematic Universe and The Avengers Blu-ray Sets

Australia is getting the Blu-ray first, almost a month earlier, but the US campaign has begun for the mega sets surrounding the Blu-ray release of The Avengersdue out on DVD and Blu-ray in the US on September 25, and we assume this set is too.

It’s one of the biggest cinema releases of the year, and it wouldn’t take a Tony Stark to figure out that this will be the biggest Blu-ray release of the year as well. Followers of the Marvel Cinematic Universe of films will have a change to complete their collection in August/September, and these two new trailers will show us how. The first is for the Blu-ray, while the second is for the previously announced Marvel’s Cinematic Universe: Phase One – Avengers Assembled 10-disc set.

No additional details have been announced, but this might be the must-own disc of the year.

  • Avi Arad Talks Venom Film, Crossover with The Avengers

Avi Arad Talks Venom Film, Crossover with The Avengers

Producer Avi Arad has been doing the rounds for The Amazing Spider-man, and he spoke with Crave Online about the future of the franchise. He spoke about the possibility of a Venom film – and a crossover with The Avengers!

Arad acknowledged some of the problems with Spider-man 3, and discussed why you won’t see Venom in the current film, or the immediate future:

““All things are possible someday[…]As you know, Venom is defender of the innocent…The only guy he really, really hates is Peter Parker, Spider-Man. The reason you didn’t see more development on Venom in the comics is because this power that he was given, he knew who Peter was, he knew who Spider-Man was, so go kill him already. We always struggle with storylines and you see the new Venom books. It’s Flash in Iraq. We know that if we put him in a certain position and concentrate on the human, not on the creature…”

Co-producer Peter Tolmach added some more about the state of production with the Venom film:

“The truth is he also deserves his own movie. We’ve been sitting around in a room talking about Venom stories and it’s a really full bodied complicated character, Eddie Brock and this character. Maybe people feel there wasn’t enough of a chance to unravel it, but we’re all in on him.”

The surprising bit of discussion was about the possibility of a team-up between Spider-man and The Avengers, who live in the same New York in the Marvel Comics. However, Spidey, Daredevil and the Fantastic Four had to sit out Disney’s big city-destroying fight because the film rights are owned by Sony and Fox respectively.

“Everything is possible…If something like that happens, it’s great for Disney, it’s great for Sony. If the right story comes in, we are now working on Venom first. It’s our first out. So our thinking is in the right direction. Avengers to me was an expected success so I never looked at it because Avengers was successful…Team ups can happen once you create the character, establish the CG, otherwise it’s not affordable.”

Marvel’s The Avengers Hints at 10-Disc Blu-ray Collection

Amazon has teased the ultimate collection of The Avengers films billed as Marvel’s Cinematic Universe: Phase One – Avengers Assembled, collecting six films together in an intriguing collectible casing. UPDATE: This has now been priced at $219.00, but Amazon is currently listing it for $153.30.

Keeping the nature of the casing quite literally under wraps, we think it is probably a briefcase with a Tesseract inside, based on the glow emanating from the box. For those of us who already have the first five films in Blu-ray, in perfectly awesome collections by themselves, there is the tease of the bonus “Phase One Archives” disc. What treasures this might hold, we may never know. Or at least until they release more details.

One thing we do know is that Australia is getting the Blu-ray first, almost a month earlier, but this might be something worth waiting for, unless we get it too. The Avengers is due out on DVD and Blu-ray in the US on September 25, and we assume this set is too.

Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One – Avengers Assembled (10-Disc Limited Edition Six-Movie Collector’s Set) [Blu-ray]

The Avengers Loki Figurine By Hot Toys Is Spookily Accurate

If the YouTube comments on our interview with Tom Hiddleston are anything to go by, the man has some pretty serious fans out there. Indeed, they’d probably want to go home with him: and now they can. Hot Toys (via Comics Alliance) has released some hyper-realistic new figurines of Hiddleston’s character Loki from Thor and The Avengers, redefining accuracy in collectibles with only 1/6 of the hassle.

From their official blurb: “Hot Toys is proud to present the collectible figure of the 6th Avenger from the hottest movie of the town – the 1/6th scale Loki Limited Edition Collectible Figurine of The Avengers from Marvel Studios. The movie-accurate collectible is specially crafted based on the image of Tom Hiddleston as Loki in the movie, highlighting the newly developed head sculpt, highly detailed costume, weapons and accessories”.

  • The Avengers Blu-ray/DVD Arrives September 25, Bonus Features Revealed

The Avengers Blu-ray/DVD Arrives September 25, Bonus Features Revealed

The Avengers Blu-ray Combo CoverBlu-ray.com (via Jo Blo and Collider) have announced the spec and release date for The Avengers on Blu-ray and DVD. With the box office now past $1 billion, it seems unlikely that the announcement that this will come out on September 25 will in any way harm its theatrical profits.

Joss Whedon had previously discussed the almost 30 minutes worth of deleted scenes that were excised from the film. The scene he spoke about in particular is the “Steve Rogers – Man Out of Time” scene, set in Cap’s apartment. There’s also the “Banner and Security Guard” extended sequence with Harry Dean Stanton, one that Mark Ruffalo had discussed being cut down. It also seems that we’ll get a lot more Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), including an alternate opening and closing.

Most exciting is the new Marvel One Shot: Item 47, which we can guess is about an artefact that S.H.I.E.L.D has recovered. The previous one-shots have connected films together, and we might assume that this is about the recovery of the Tesseract or the weapon from the Destroyer. It might be the return of Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg).

  • Joss Whedon Thanks ‘Peeps’ for The Avengers. We Think.

Joss Whedon Thanks ‘Peeps’ for The Avengers. We Think.

The Avengers poster - AustraliaThe pressure may have finally cracked writer/director Joss Whedon thanks the fan base for the massive response to The Avengers over the last few weeks. The film has now earned over $700 million worldwide at the box office, and is well on its way to breaking more records every day.

As a result, Whedon posted the following on Whedonesque, which takes the form of a sincere thanks filtered through a transcript of an interview with reporter/hanger-on Rutherford D. Actualperson. We dare not question it, for he just made The Avengers.

The Purple. IN WHICH the guy who comes before “Esque” shares his deep depth, and then links you to a vid of him as a poop coach.

    “YeahbuhWHUH?”

    –Kitty Pryde

    Dear Friends,

Well, it’s been quite a weekend. Someday, long from now, I will even have an emotional reaction to it, like a person would. I can’t wait! But before I become blinded by this “emotion” experience, there’s a few things I’d like to say. Well, type.

People have told me that this matters, that my life is about to change. I am sure that is true. And change is good — change is exciting. I think — not to jinx it — that I may finally be recognized at Comiccon. Imagine! Also, with my percentage of “the Avengers” gross, I can afford to buy… [gets call from agent. Weeps manfully. Resumes typing.] …a fine meal. But REALLY fine, with truffles and s#!+. And I can get a studio to finance my dream project, the reboot of “Air Bud” that we all feel is so long overdue. (He could play Jai Alai! Think of the emotional ramifications of JAI ALAI!!!!)

What doesn’t change is anything that matters. What doesn’t change is that I’ve had the smartest, most loyal, most passionate, most articulate group of — I’m not even gonna say fans. I’m going with “peeps” — that any cult oddity such as my bad self could have dreamt of. When almost no one was watching, when people probably should have STOPPED watching, I’ve had three constants: my family and friends, my collaborators (often the same), and y’all. A lot of stories have come out about my “dark years”, and how I’m “unrecognized”… I love these stories, because they make me seem super-important, but I have never felt the darkness (and I’m ALL about my darkness) that they described. Because I have so much. I have people, in my life, on this site, in places I’ve yet to discover, that always made me feel the truth of success: an artist and an audience communicating. Communicating to the point of collaborating. I’ve thought, “maybe I’m over; maybe I’ve said my piece”. But never with fear. Never with rancor. Because of y’all. Because you knew me when. If you think topping a box office record compares with someone telling you your work helped them through a rough time, you’re probably new here. (For the record, and despite my inhuman distance from the joy-joy of it: topping a box office record is super-dope. I’m an alien, not a robot.) So this is me, saying thank you. All of you. You’ve taken as much guff for loving my work as I have for over-writing it, and you deserve, in this our time of streaming into the main, to crow. To glow. To crow and go “I told you so”, to those Joe Blows not in the know. (LAST time I hire Dr. Seuss to punch my posts up. Yeesh!) Point being, you deserve some honor, AND you deserves some FAQs answered. So please welcome my old friend and certainly not-on-my-payroll reporter/flunky, Rutherford D. Actualperson!

RDA: So good to see you, young Joss! is it possible you’ve gotten more attractive since we last spoke, and less fungal in odor?

JW: Thanks for noticing. Let’s talk.

RDA: “the Scavengers” is a huge success! Does this mean you have changed the very fabric of existence?

JW: Dude, it’s just a movie. Also, yes.

RDA: I’ve seen a lot of a talk about “the Availers” vs “the Dark Knight Rises”. How will you feel if you’re eclipsed by Nolan?

JW: I’m glad I made you ask that. I will feel sad. But let’s look at the bigger picture, and I can’t say this enough: THIS IS NOT A ZERO SUM GAME. Our successes, whoever has the mostest, are a boon to each other. We’re in the business of proving that superhero movies aren’t just eye-candy (they’re eye-TRUFFLES!). People seem intent on setting us against each other, and though I’m proud to be Woody Strode to Nolan’s Kirk Douglas, I think they’re missing the point. Whatever TDKR does on its first weekend, the only stat that matters to me is the ticket I’M definitely buying. Nolan and Raimi INVENTED the true superhero flick, yo. (Special mention to Jon Favreau and James Gunn.) Happy to be in the mix.

RDA: What does this mean for your upcoming slate of tiny independent films/Internet shenanigans? Will they fall by the wayside?

JW: There may be new ideas realized — I always leave myself open to that — but my commitment to Wastelanders and Dr H.2 does not waver. Those stories bubble on my stove.

    RDA: And TV?

JW: TV is my great love. To tell stories with that alacrity, intensity, and immediacy… Nothing quite like it. I imagine it’s not dissimilar to the feeling great poker players have: “Here’s what I got, here’s where I’m going… How to trick everybody into thinking I know what I’m doing?” [Full disclosure : Joss hates poker. He is probably talking about bridge. But it should apply nonetheless.].

RDA: What message would you give fans of “the Lavenders” who are not so familiar with your previous work?

JW: “Cabin In the Woods”: still in (some) theaters!

RDA: Is ‘the Ravengers” a perfect movie? It did get an A+ cinemascore…

JW: There are very few perfect movies. “The Court Jester”, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, “Godfather” I & II… The list does not go on and on. “The Avengers” is notably IMperfect, which makes its success mean so much more to me — because it’s striking a chord that matters MORE than its obvious flaws. Like the team, it appears to be more than the sun of its parts. Boo-yah!

RDA: What do you feel is the greatest achievement of “the Avoiders”?

JW: Getting “mewling quim” out there to the masses. Also, Hulk.

RDA: Anyone in particular you’d like to thank?

JW: [Reads from notecard]. I couldn’t have done this myself. Part of this Saturn Award belongs to Jeremy Latcham, Kevin Feige, and the fine Marvel folk… But the secret ingredient is my closest peeps: J-Mo, who did uncredited punch-up work (carrier battle, yo!), Z-bro, Drew “I am Loki only taller and foppier” Goddard, and Kai, all of whom worked the story with me. Without them (and Jeremy), I’d still be figuring out how the Wasp fits in to this, and where to put Red Hulk.

RDA: What’s next for Joss “finally got it right for a change” Whedon?

JW: Can we not call me that?

    RDA: Just deal. Whut up?

JW: I really think we should discuss that nickname, but I’m finishing “Much Ado About Nothing” this month. If you liked “the Avengers”, you’ll love… I can’t. It’s Shakespeare. And not in the park. I hope it gets watched.

RDA: Any message to your precious “Whedonesk?”

    JW: Whedonettes?

    RDA: Weeble-eque?

JW: I’m not aware of that group.

RDA: Didn’t they know you when?

JW: I’m not sure who you mean. I’m discarding my old fans so I can concentrate on fame, Euro-trash guy-jewelry and my precious “Air Bud” reboot. But, dude, don’t print that!

    RDA: You have my word.

So, that’s our post! Hope you enjoyed it. Hope you’ll continue to carry the banner even though other people may have joined the parade. (Kind of a gay pride/Newsies vibe: sentence accomplished!) Hope you understand how I feel. Cliff notes: grateful.

“Here’s to us. Who’s like us? Damn few”
    — Stephen Sondheim, “Merrily We Roll Along”.

“It took a dog playing Jai Alai to teach us humanity!”
–Me, in that awesome film I’m gonna make.

  • The Avengers Smashes Records with $200 Million Opening Weekend

The Avengers Smashes Records with $200 Million Opening Weekend

The Avengers Assemble posterAfter a stunning $80.5 million opening Friday in the US, analysts were predicting a $170 weekend for Marvel’s The Avengers, putting it just ahead of last year’s $169.2 million Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 weekend. However, Joss Whedon’s film has defied expectations with an unprecedented $200.3 million opening weekend that will leave Disney asking “John Carter, who?”.

This figure puts it as the biggest US opening weekend of all time, and the fastest to reach $200 million. It will also cross the $600 million mark today internationally, after another $151.5 million this weekend internationally totalling $441.5 million overseas from 52 territories.

This has already put it ahead of Thor ($181 million), Captain America: The First Avenger ($176.6 million) and The Incredible Hulk ($134.8 million). It will now set its sights next weekend for Iron Man and Iron Man 2 ($318.4 million and $312.4 million, respectively).

Could this be the biggest superhero film of the year? May has typically marked the start of the blockbuster season, but with The Amazing Spider-man and The Dark Knight Rises still to come, this might be one of the biggest box office years for at least three of the major studios.
