First Look: Image of Henry Cavill as Superman in ‘Man of Steel’

Warner Bros. has sent over the first image from Zack Snyder’s forthcoming Superman reboot, Man of Steel. Unlike the recently leaked images from The Dark Knight Rises, this one is hi-res and official and such.

Henry Cavill as Superman in Warner's The Man of Steel

It is a fairly iconic pose for a Superman, and Cavill certainly looks the part, although it is yet to be seen whether or not Snyder (following the crap-fest that was Sucker Punch) has the follow-through to get beyond the surface sheen and the “look” of the character.

Speaking of the look, how do we all feel about the hair? No kiss curl it seems, which is a major departure from all the film depictions to date, and there is a definite move to make this a much “darker” Superman in keeping with the success of the Christopher Nolan/Batman cinematic universe. While it is too early to judge an entire film based on a single image, although we imagine that is happening all over the Interwebs right now, there is something iconic about Superman that should never be made dark or sinister.

Anyways, any new superhero movie is going to get our attention and we’ll be following this one closely.

    Now for the press bit:

[stextbox id=”grey”]Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures have provided the first look at the new Man of Steel, revealing star Henry Cavill as Superman in the film from director Zack Snyder.

The film also stars three-time Oscar® nominee Amy Adams (The Fighter) as Daily Planet journalist Lois Lane, and Oscar® nominee Laurence Fishburne (What’s Love Got to Do with It) as her editor-in-chief, Perry White. Starring as Clark Kent’s adoptive parents, Martha and Jonathan Kent, are Oscar® nominee Diane Lane (Unfaithful) and Academy Award® winner Kevin Costner (Dances with Wolves).

Squaring off against the superhero are two other surviving Kryptonians, the villainous General Zod, played by Oscar® nominee Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road), and Faora, Zod’s evil partner, played by Antje Traue. Also from Superman’s native Krypton are Lara Lor-Van, Superman’s mother, played by Julia Ormond, and Superman’s father, Jor-El, portrayed by Academy Award® winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator).

Rounding out the cast are Harry Lennix as U.S. military man General Swanwick, as well as Christopher Meloni as Colonel Hardy.

Man of Steel is being produced by Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder. The screenplay was written by David S. Goyer, from a story by Goyer and Nolan, based upon Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster and published by DC Comics. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.[/stextbox]

Man of Steel is released on 13 June 2013 in the US. It is yet to receive an Australian release date.

New images and trailer from ‘Chalet Girl’

Paramount has released a selection of new images from the forthcoming Chalet Girl, a new British comedy starring Felicity Jones, Ed Westwick, Bill Nighy and Brooke Shields.

Pretty tomboy Kim Matthews (Felicity Jones, S.Darko), 19, used to be a champion skateboarder – but now she’s stuck in a dead end job trying to support her Dad. Opportunity comes knocking in the form of a catering job in the one of the most exclusive chalets in the Alps. At first, Kim’s baffled by this bizarre new world of posh people, champagne and skiing – but then she discovers snowboarding, and the chance to win some much-needed prize money at the big end-of-season competition. But before she can become a champion again, Kim’s going to have to dig deep to overcome her fears. Hard enough, without the complicating factor of Jonny (Ed Westwick, Gossip Girl), her handsome – though spoken for – boss…

UPDATE: We have added the Australian trailer and one-sheet poster.

  • Poster for Jeff Nichols’ ‘Take Shelter’

Poster for Jeff Nichols’ ‘Take Shelter’

We were suitably impressed by Jeff Nichols’ sophomore effort Take Shelter when we saw it back in June at the Sydney Film Festival. Now thanks to Movieline we can have a look at the suitably minimalist US poster for the psychological thriller and (possible) disaster film. Or is it? That would be spoiling the fun though, wouldn’t it?

At the time we called it “simply astounding” and “a film that totally captures the zeitgeist”. Yes, we are desperate for a pull-quote. Clearly neither of those made it onto the US poster below. Perhaps we can always hold out hope for the eventual Australian release.

Another day, another couple of characters from Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey revealed. When Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freedman) takes his unexpected journey, he will be accompanied by 13 dwarves and our old friend Gandalf (Sir Ian McKellan). We already known what the last one looks like, so thanks to MSN’s The Hitlist we are getting a few pictures of the other companions at a time.

The latest dwarf photo is of Dean O’Gorman as Fili and Aidan Turner as Kili.

  • First Look: ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ poster revealed

First Look: ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ poster revealed

The Dark Knight Rises is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated films of 2012, and with its teaser trailer set to play in front of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in cinemas, Warner goes and drops the teaser poster in our laps this fine July day for the third film in Christopher Nolan‘s Batman series.

For all of the viral campaigns, image leaks, casting decisions and other rumours, this poster just screams “iconic”, and its crumbling Gotham walls give us hints of the devastation and brutality that Bruce Wayne/Batman, portrayed by Christian Bale, will have to face when he in rises in mid-2012.

The film also stars Anne Hathaway, as Selina Kyle; Tom Hardy, as Bane; Oscar® winner Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose), as Miranda Tate; and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, as John Blake.

Returning to the main cast, Oscar® winner Michael Caine plays Alfred; Gary Oldman is Commissioner Gordon; and Oscar® winner Morgan Freeman reprises the role of Lucius Fox.

Now doesn’t this poster remind you just a little bit of Inception?

First Look: ‘John Carter’ Concept Art

John Carter posterIn the lead up to the trailer due to be launched this Thursday, we see that Disney (via Apple Trailers) have released some hi-res concept artwork of the Edgar Rice Burroughs adaptation due out next year. Originally titled John Carter of Mars, the new and spiffier title of John Carter may diminish any bad feelings people still have for Disney’s ill-fated Mission to Mars, based on the theme park ride of the same name.

From Academy Award(R)-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes “John Carter”–a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). John Carter is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.

“This tour was all about going out and performing for our amazing fans who have supported our show from the beginning, but due to the limited time we had to travel during our hiatus, there were only so many cities we could get to before we had to resume work on the television series,” commented Murphy. “We knew that not every fan who wanted to attend a concert would get that opportunity.  Now, thanks to our friends at Twentieth Century Fox Film, we’ll be able to bring the concert experience to movie cinemas in full three dimensional glory. We promise every passionate ‘Gleek’ a cinematic experience that will have them singing and dancing in the aisles.”

Glee: The 3D Concert Movie will be released in Australia on 11 August 2011 from Fox.
