  • A New Clip from Disney/Pixar’s La Luna Arrives Online

A New Clip from Disney/Pixar’s La Luna Arrives Online

Set to screen with Brave in cinemas this June, Disney/Pixar‘s latest short is the Oscar-nominated La Luna, and Walt Disney Pictures has released a brand new clip of it online.

The story follows a young boy who is taken to work one night by his grandfather, who has a very unusual occupation. Take a look at the title and try and guess what it might involve. This short looks like a stunning short debut for Enrico Casarosa, and Pixar fans will know that the company uses their shorts as a audition for the main event. We can only guess at what amazing things he has ahead of him. The music is from long-time Pixar (and J.J. Abrams for that matter) collaborator, Michael Giacchino.

Brave will be released in Australia on 21 June 2012 and 22 June 2012 in the US from Disney.

Pixar film set inside a “girl’s mind”

Pixar Animation Studios LogoBig Screen Animation has linked to an interview with John Lasseter, director and the chief creative officer at Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios, on the Charlie Rose show on Friday. Along with highlighting the amazing run of films that Pixar has had over the years, and promoting the next Disney/Pixar film Brave, he gave some details about future Pixar projects.

Previously announced only as The Untitled Pixar Movie That Takes You Inside The Mind, we still don’t have a title, but Lasseter confirms that Pete Doctor is directing and hints at what we can expect from the film.

“Pete Docter, from Monsters, Inc. and Up, is doing a new film that takes place inside of a girl’s mind and it is about her emotions as characters, and that is unlike anything you’ve ever seen.”

The Pixar Times also adds the official synopsis of the film:

Pixar takes audiences on incredible journeys into extraordinary worlds: from the darkest depths of the ocean to the top of the tepui mountains in South America; from the fictional metropolis of Monstropolis to a futuristic fantasy of outer space. From director Pete Docter (“Up,” “Monsters, Inc.”) and producer Jonas Rivera (“Up”), the inventive new film will take you to a place that everyone knows, but no one has ever seen: the world inside the human mind.

This sounds like the stuff of classic Pixar, but it will be a very long wait until 2014.

The full video of the excellent interview, which also includes a lengthy tribute to Steve Jobs and a discussion on animation generally, can be found embedded below.

The Untitled Pixar Movie That Takes You Inside The Mind will be released on 20 May 2014 from Disney/Pixar.

  • Disney/Pixar releases full trailer for Brave

Disney/Pixar releases full trailer for Brave

Brave posterWith the official photos released earlier this week, a trailer couldn’t be far behind. Disney/Pixar have revealed the first full trailer for their next animated feature film, Brave.

The film seems to be much lighter in tone that the earlier previews would have suggested, all filled with fog and Scottish mysticism. From this latest trailer, Brave has more of a Tangled vibe, and that couldn’t possibly be a bad thing.

Synopsis: Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In “Brave,” a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts.

Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Wise Woman (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.

Brave will be released in Australia on 21 June 2012 and 22 June 2012 in the US from Disney.

  • New clip from Toy Story: Small Fry

New clip from Toy Story: Small Fry

With the release of The Muppets in the US at the end of the month, Disney/Pixar will unveil the second of its Toy Story short films, Toy Story: Small Fry. Originally announced back at D23 in August, Walt Disney Studios has just released the first image from this short.

Last week, we revealed two images from the forthcoming short film, and is the second in a series of short spin-off films from the successful Toy Story series, the first being Toy Story Toons: Hawaiian Vacation, which debuted with Cars 2 earlier this year. We saw the film last week, and it’s fantastic.

Buzz Lightyear is left behind at a fast food restaurant when a kids’ meal toy version of Buzz takes his place. While Bonnie’s toys are stuck with the annoying three-inch-tall Buzz impersonator, the real Buzz is trapped in the restaurant at a support group for discarded toys. As Woody and the gang devise a way to rescue their friend, Buzz tries to escape the toy psychotherapy meeting.

The Muppets will be released on 23 November 2011 in the US and on 5 January 2012 in Australia from Disney.

With the release of The Muppets in the US at the end of the month, Disney/Pixar will unveil the second of its Toy Story short films, Toy Story: Small Fry. Originally announced back at D23 in August, Walt Disney Studios has just released the first image from this short.

We saw this short earlier this week in front of a very early screening of The Muppets, and while can’t say too much, we are delighted to tell you that it is hilarious. It’s an epic tale of support groups, the lost, the found and happy meal toys. Yes, there is also a 3-inch Buzz Lightyear. You’ll see what we mean.

This is the second in a series of short spin-off films from the successful Toy Story series, the first being Toy Story Toons: Hawaiian Vacation, which debuted with Cars 2 earlier this year.

  • Disney-Pixar to re-release Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc in 3D

Disney-Pixar to re-release Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc in 3D

The Little Mermaid posterFollowing the massive success of The Lion King 3D re-release last month, followed closely by  the Blu-ray issue of the film, Disney have announced via a press release that they will be bringing a number of their classic films back to cinemas in 3D. Unsurprisingly, these will be the films that have made the most money for the studio over the years, including Beauty and the Beast, Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc. and our favourite, The Little Mermaid.

“Great stories and great characters are timeless, and at Disney we’re fortunate to have a treasure trove of both,” said Alan Bergman, President, The Walt Disney Studios. “We’re thrilled to give audiences of all ages the chance to experience these beloved tales in an exciting new way with 3D – and in the case of younger generations, for the first time on the big screen.”

    • Beauty and the Beast – January 13, 2012
    • Disney•Pixar’s Finding Nemo – September 14, 2012
    • Disney•Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. – January 18, 2013 (Monsters University, a prequel to the original film, arrives in theaters in Disney Digital 3D on June 21, 2013)
    • The Little Mermaid – September 13, 2013

The above dates are for the US cinema releases, of course, and will undoubtedly be different in Australia due to the scheduling of school holidays.

Beauty and the Beast, as Australian viewers will know, was already released in 3D for a limited engagement last year, just prior to the Blu-ray release of that film. With cinemas around the world loving the ability to charge extra for seats to 3D films, we can definitely expect to see more re-issues over the coming years.

  • Lee Unkrich chronicles work on new Pixar film

Lee Unkrich chronicles work on new Pixar film

Lee UnkrichPixar’s Lee Unkrich, director of Toy Story 3 and co-director of Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo and Toy Story 2, has announced via his Twitter and Tumblr pages that he has begun work on a new film.

On 23 September, he Tweeted “Tomorrow is a big day that may determine the next four years of my life. Wish me luck”, presumably referring to a pitch at Pixar.

Yesterday, the director added “Today is day one on my next project. Every day I’ll post a new photo chronicling the journey”. Using the hashtag #UnkADay, Unkrich is now chronicling the journey from script to screen.

The first two photos have been a picture of his keyboard, and his standard lunch. From this we can only assume he is at the writing stage, and eating well. As he noted this morning, “I never promised these would be exciting, folks. You get what you pay for”.

Given the amount of time it takes to create a Pixar film from scratch, we could be waiting sometime before we see anything concrete from the film. We will definitely keep you posted on this.

  • D23 Expo: Disney-Pixar announces 2 new films, poster for ‘Tangled Ever After’

D23 Expo: Disney-Pixar announces 2 new films, poster for ‘Tangled Ever After’

A big day of news at the D23 Expo as Disney-Pixar announced details on two forthcoming feature films.

The first of these, presented cheekily as The Untitled Pixar Movie About Dinosaurs, proposes that the evolution-changing asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs actually missed the Earth, and dinosaurs still exist and continue to evolve. Directed by Bob Peterson (Up), the film is due for a release in the holiday season of 2013.

The summer 2014 film, using the working title of The Untitled Pixar Movie That Takes You Inside The Mind, was thinner on plot details, but it was hinted that Pete Docter (Up, Monsters Inc) would be involved. This is undoubtedly the mystery Pixar film the studio announced for May 30, 2014 in a press release earlier this month.

The next film from the studio will be Brave (22 June 2012), followed by the Monsters Inc. prequel Monsters University (21 June 2013).

    Tangled Ever After

In other news, Disney also revealed the poster for the upcoming Tangled Ever After,  a short film from Tangled directors  Nathan  Greno and Byron Howard. Plot details were scarce, but the US should see this one on the Disney Channel in “Spring 2012” (Source: /Film). That’s the second quater for those of us in the southern hemisphere.

The D23 Expo runs from 19 to 21 August, and it is expected that news on The Avengers, now owned by Disney as part of their Marvel Comics purchase, will be unveiled.
