Trailer and poster for Werner Herzog’s Into the Abyss

Fresh from the international acclaim of Cave of Forgotten Dreams, Werner Herzog‘s latest documentary looks set to be one of his most powerful examinations yet. The accompanying poster demonstrates Herzog’s powerful observational gaze, and his knowledge of where to use it most effectively.

Legendary filmmaker Werner Herzog (Cave of Forgotten Dreams, Grizzly Man) returns with Into the Abyss: A Tale of Death, A Tale of Life, a riveting examination of a horrible crime which probes the human psyche to explore why people kill–and why the state kills. In intimate conversations with those involved, including 28-year-old death row inmate Michael Perry (who was scheduled to die eight days after his interview with Herzog), the filmmaker achieves what he describes as “a gaze into the abyss of the human soul.” As he’s so often done before, Herzog’s investigation unveils layers of humanity, making an enlightening trip out of ominous territory.

Mondo have done some great posters over the years, and their well-timed posters for the release of the Jurassic Park Blu-rays are quite impressive.

  • Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol gets a new poster

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol gets a new poster

Yahoo! Movies has released a third poster for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, following the single shot of TOM CRUISE!™ and another of TOM CRUISE!™ climbing a building. This one takes the focus off the star slightly by putting some other people in the poster. He still seems to have his hood up from that explosion he was walking away from earlier, so he doesn’t really notice his costars Jeremy Renner and Paula Patton. Also, “Hello, at the back there, Mr. Simon Pegg!”.

Blamed for the terrorist bombing of the Kremlin, IMF operative Ethan Hunt is disavowed along with the rest of the agency when the President initiates “Ghost Protocol”.  Left without any resources or backup, Ethan must find a way to clear his agency’s name and prevent another attack. To complicate matters further, Ethan is forced to embark on this mission with a team of fellow IMF fugitives whose personal motives he does not fully know.

Tom Cruise returns in the starring role as Ethan Hunt and is joined by an international cast that includes Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Paula Patton, Michael Nyqvist, Vladimir Mashkov, Josh Holloway, Anil Kapoor and Léa Seydoux.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol is due for release in Australia on 15 December 2011 from Paramount.

  • New poster for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

New poster for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

We still maintain our skepticism over the need, and the potential quality, of the forthcoming David Fincher remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but goddamn if it hasn’t had a stylish campaign so far. This latest poster from viral site Mouth Taped Shut quite literally puts Daniel Craig inside Rooney Mara, although both keep their clothes on this time.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is the first film in Columbia Pictures’ three-picture adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s literary blockbuster The Millennium Trilogy. Directed by David Fincher and starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara, the film is based on the first novel in the trilogy, which altogether have sold 50 million copies in 46 countries and become a worldwide phenomenon. The screenplay is by Steven Zaillian.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is released in Australia on 12 January 2012 from Sony.

  • Poster for Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace 3D

Poster for Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace 3D

Lucasfilm (via ComingSoon.Net) has released a poster for Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace 3D. The trailer is due to play this week in the US in front of The Three Musketeers.

Two Jedi knights uncover a wider conflict when they are sent as emissaries to the blockaded planet Naboo.

It looks like somebody has discovered Photoshop! Couldn’t help but notice (thanks to Ben Harlum) that no mention of actual stars Natalie Portman and Liam Neeson are made on the poster. Star Wars could now have genuinely claimed this to star “Oscar winners”. It also wisely chooses to ignore Jar Jar Binks, unless this is the latest in a series of alterations from Lucas that actually removes three of the characters? In the case of the latter, that may be a combination of wishful thinking and wise marketing.

We know it’s hard, people, but try and get behind this. It may just mean seeing more Star Wars films in 3D, and that will only happen if this is financially viable.

Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace 3D is released on 9 February 2012 in Australia from Fox.

  • Cool Drive poster from Hopko Designs

Cool Drive poster from Hopko Designs

Our good friend Scott Hopko of Hopko Designs sent us over this concept artwork for Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive.

Drive is the story of a Hollywood stunt driver-by-day (Gosling), a loner by nature, who moonlights as a top-notch getaway driver-for-hire in the criminal underworld. He finds himself a target for some of LA’s most dangerous men after agreeing to aid the husband of his beautiful neighbour, Irene (Mulligan). When the job goes dangerously awry, the only way he can keep Irene and her son alive is to do what he does best—Drive!

This is not official artwork, of course, but we just really like the look of this. It reminds us of the Queens of the Stone age music video for “Go With the Flow“!

You can find more of Hopko’s movie posters over at his Facebook page, and their design work at his website. There’s some more cool art for classic and contemporary films.

Drive is released on 27 October 2011 in Australia from Pinnacle.
