Last night, we had a chance to see Super 8 at a media screening and we can confirm what we suspected all along: it’s fabulous. It’s the kind of rollicking adventure we’ve not seen in years, combining the kind of “boys own adventure” films like The Goonies and Stand By Me, the charm of late-1970s/early 1980s Steven Spielberg and…something else entirely. A genre conquering Goliath that is easily the best of the year. You can quote us on the poster with that one if you like, Paramount.
Our full review will be out next week, when Super 8 hits cinemas around the world, but in the meantime let this train wreck of a clip satiate your collective desires to find out more about the mysterious film. Be warned that it does contain minor spoilers, but none that couldn’t have been gleaned from the trailers and clips released so far:
In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth – something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined. Directed by J.J. Abrams from his original script, the Amblin Entertainment and Bad Robot Production film is produced by Steven Spielberg, Abrams and Bryan Burk.
The film stars Elle Fanning, Kyle Chandler, Ron Eldard, Noah Emmerich, Gabriel Basson, Joel Courtney, Ryan Lee, Zach Mills and Amanda Michalka.
Super 8 is released on 9 June 2011 in Australia from Paramount.
