Melancholia tops European Film Awards

European Film Awards statueThe award season marches on across the globe, and the European Film Academy has announced the winners of its 2011 European Film Awards.

More than 2500 filmmakers across Europe vote for the prize, and at the ceremony held in Berlin Melancholia was the leading film. Winning the European Film 2011, it also took out Cinematography for Manuel Alberto Claro and Production Design for Jette Lehmann. The King’s Speech was also a big winner with three awards for European Actor (Colin Firth)

Susanne Bier was the winner of best director for her hard-hitting feature In a Better World, while the current darling of the US awards season, The Artist, only won the European Composer for Ludovic Bource. Tilda Swinton won the actress award for We Need to Talk About Kevin. Can we also just say it is great to see Terry Gilliam win something for his short The Wholly Family.
