AACTA announces International Awards Nominees and First Winners

Melancholia - Kirsten Dunst and Lars Von Trier

Melancholia - Australian posterThe Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) announced the nominees for its first ever AACTA International Awards at the G’Day USA Black Tie Gala held in Los Angeles on 14 January, 2012.

It launched five new award categories recognising international achievements in film as follows: Best Film, Best Direction, Best Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Actress. The Artist and Melancholia let the pack, with four nominations a piece, including Best Film. A full list of the international winners can be found below: AACTA also announced the first of its local winners at a luncheon in Sydney today. There are really no surprises, except for the fact that not a single foreign-language film made the list of the international nominees, and they otherwise follow the main US awards at the moment.

The prestigious AACTA Raymond Longford Award, the nation’s highest screen accolade, was presented to Australian cinematography legend, Donald M. McAlpine (ACS/ASC). Filmmaker Ivan Sen was presented with the Byron Kennedy Award, which celebrates “outstanding creative enterprise within the film and television industries and is given to an individual or organisation whose work embodies innovation and the relentless pursuit of excellence”.

AACTA’s inaugural awards season will culminate with the spectacular Samsung AACTA Awards Ceremony at the Sydney Opera House on 31 January 2012, which will be broadcast around Australia on the Nine Network.
