They’ve shocked, scared and sometimes just weirded us out, but now the Fantastic Planet and A Night of Horror film festivals have come together to conquer all that stand in their path.
From the press release:
Two of Sydney’s favourite film festivals, Fantastic Planet and A Night of Horror have announced they will join forces in 2012 to create Australia’s ultimate genre film festival, celebrating the best local and international horror, fantasy and science fiction films.
Retaining the name Fantastic Planet Film Festival, the Festival will take place over eleven huge days of film and will replace the two individual events. It will also host the Sydney leg of Melbourne’s Fantastic Asia Film Festival, showcasing five of the best feature films from the event.
A Night of Horror International Film Festival and Sydney’s science-fiction and fantasy film festival Fantastic Planet, were established in 2007 and 2009 respectively, and have since developed a strong cult following with a combined audience attendance of over 5,000 in 2011.
Fantastic Planet Film Festival director Dr. Dean Bertram said, “We combined the festivals because we really want Sydney to have a film event that showcases the world’s best fantastic genre films under the one banner: much like other leading international film festivals such as Fantasia, PIFAN, Fantastic Fest and Sitges.”
“I am very proud of the festival’s program this year. The quality and range of the selections is phenomenal. Whether you are a fan of horror, sci-fi, fantasy, thriller, cult or Asian cinema, you are going to be blown away.”
From over 600 submissions received internationally, the Fantastic Planet Film Festival 2012 will screen a selection of 25 feature films and more than 80 shorts, many being Australian premieres and recipients of international awards and recognition.
