To celebrate International Women’s Day, we present (via THR and Cinema Blend) the trailer and poster for Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines from director Kristy Guevara-Flanagan.
According Vaquera Films: “the documentary traces the fascinating evolution and legacy of Wonder Woman. From the birth of the comic book superheroine in the 1940s to the blockbusters of today, Wonder Women! looks at how popular representations of powerful women often reflect society’s anxieties about women’s liberation. Wonder Women! goes behind the scenes with Lynda Carter, Lindsay Wagner, comic writers and artists, and real life superheroines such as Gloria Steinem, Shelby Knox and others who offer an enlightening and entertaining counterpoint to the male dominated superhero genre”.
This documentary sounds incredibly timely, especially with the furor within and outside the comic fan community that the overt sexualisation of female characters, particularly within DC’s New 52, has caused. Particular bones of contention were around several issues of Batman and Catwoman having sex on a rooftop in the pages of Catwoman, Batwoman frequently undressing and the one-note sexual being of Starfire in Red Hood and the Outlaws.
