‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’: Mantis and Baby Groot revealed in concept art

EW has revealed the first concept art from GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2, the sequel to the 2014 blockbuster adaptation from Marvel Studios and Disney. It features Drax, Groot, Yondu, Star-Lord, Rocket, Nebula, and Gamora, along with new character Mantis. The giant explosion in the background is yet to be named. We’ll call it Fred.

Portrayed by actress Pom Klementieff, the character first appeared in the comics in 1973, but became a part of Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning’s Guardians of the Galaxy in 2008 following the Annihilation: Conquest event. “She has never really experienced social interaction,” describes executive producer Jonathan Schwartz. “Everything she learns about dealing with people, she learns from the Guardians of the Galaxy, which is a very weird group to learn your social intricacies from.”

In the explosive art from Andy Park, you’ll also notice the tiny seedling on Drax’s shoulder that is Baby Groot, silhouetted against Fred. He was last seen dancing to the Jackson 5 in the credits of the first film. Schwartz offers up the intriguing tidbit: “He doesn’t have the wisdom and experience of that Groot. He’s a younger Groot and a more rambunctious Groot. The question is, is he the same Groot, just smaller? Or is he a different Groot that’s sprung up from the seed of the first Groot?”

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 hits cinemas in the US on 5 May 2017from Disney.
