“The X-Men. The Brotherhood. We don’t even know if they exist anymore.” The first official trailer for GIFTED, the new X-Men universe series from Fox, marks itself as being in a distinct point in the timeline. It arrives this Fall into an already crowded schedule, and alongside Legion, will mark the second X-Men series currently on TV.
Directed by Bryan Singer, who brought us X-Men, X-Men 2, X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse, GIFTED tells the story of a suburban couple whose ordinary lives are rocked by the sudden discovery that their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive.
From the dialogue, it seems that the series is set in that nexus between the current films and whatever happens to mutants by the time Logan rolls around. How it will be connected to the ambiguously timelined Legion is yet to be seen.
Written by Matt Nix (APB, “Burn Notice”), and executive-produced by Nix, Singer, Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg, Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory, the series stars Stephen Moyer and Amy Acker.
