In a week when North and South Korean relations have been at their best in over half a century, CJ Entertainment has released the international trailer for thriller THE SPY GONE NORTH (공작).
In 1993 Korea, the only country where the Cold War continues, tensions surrounding the development of nuclear weapons escalate. Seok-young Park (Hwang Jung-Min), an army major in the South Korea military intelligence infiltrates the North Korean nuclear facility, disguised as a South Korean business man. While Seok-young gains the North Koreans’ trust, he quickly learns of secret deals between the two Koreas.
The film will make its world premiere at the Cannes International Film Festival as part of the “Midnight Screenings” this month. CJ Entertainment has picked it up for North American theatrical release. It will be interesting to see if this becomes a sore point for either of the Koreas, particularly given the spirit of peace that has been initiated in the last few weeks.
Regardless of its politics, the film itself looks to be a taut thriller. Director Yoon Jong-Bin has brought us The Unforgiven (2005), Nameless Gangster (2011) and Kundo (2014), so this will undoubtedly be one of the more highly anticipated Korean releases of the year.
