First trailer for ‘The Hate U Give’

The Hate U Give

20th Century Fox has dropped the powerful new trailer for THE HATE U GIVE, which debuted at the BET Awards on Sunday in the US. Based on Angie Thomas’ debut novel, this is one of the most anticipated films of the next few months. You can check out the trailer below.

Starr Carter is constantly switching between two worlds: the poor, mostly black, neighbourhood where she lives and the rich, mostly white, prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer.  Now, facing pressures from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what’s right.

Thomas’s novel gave Starr a voice that is never didactic or inauthentic. It is merely a window into an event that may seem extraordinary to the outside, but reveals the everyday realities for millions. Like her character, Thomas uses her most powerful weapon (her voice) to respond to myths perpetuated by a seemingly immovable paradigm. The aim of a film on this scale is to take that message of everyday activism to the wider community.

Directed by film features Amandla Stenberg as Starr, with Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Issa Rae, KJ Apa, Algee Smith, Sabrina Carpenter, Common and Anthony Mackie. This is being released on 19 October 2018 in the US, but Australians will have to wait all the way until 17 January 2019 to see this.
