Disney’s ‘Mulan’ begins production, reveals first look

Mulan - 1998 v Liu Yifei

Production has begun on Disney’s next live-action adaptation of an animated classic. The 1998 animated film MULAN is being remade by Niki Caro (Whale Rider) and features Chinese actress, model and singer Liu Yifei, who is pictured below.

Liu Yifei is best known for her work alongside Jackie Chan and Jet Li in 2008’s The Forbidden Kingdom. More recently she has appeared in The Four series of films and Hanson and the Beast. She will reunite with Jet Li in MULAN, with the legendary actor portraying the Emperor of China.

Disney’s official synopsis reads:

MULAN is the epic adventure of a fearless young woman who masquerades as a man in order to fight Northern Invaders attacking China. The eldest daughter of an honored warrior, Hua Mulan is spirited, determined and quick on her feet. When the Emperor issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army, she steps in to take the place of her ailing father as Hua Jun, becoming one of China’s greatest warriors ever.

Filming will take place in New Zealand, because it’s really beautiful and people like spending time there. Other cast members include Yoson An, Gong Li, Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, and Ron Yuan. It is currently slated for a 27 March 2020 release in the US from Disney.
