Fun and bloody, the latest adaptation of a classic comic-book character revels in ultra-violence and takes no prisoners in the process.

Judge Dredd first appeared in Britain in the pages of 2000 AD’s second issue in 1977, but was ultimately a response to the seemingly fascist police state being created by Margaret Thatcher in the following years. So it is entirely appropriate that the latest version of John Wagner’s creation should reappear when law enforcement bodies have even more power than ever to be judge, juries and executioners in a response to the global threat of terror.  With the bad taste of the Sylvester Stallone vehicle Judge Dredd (1995) still lingering in the back palate of both film and comic fans everywhere, the not inconsiderable talents of writer Alex Garland have been brought in to render one of the most brutal screen versions of a comic book character to date.

Garland’s Dredd draws from a number of different sources, but is most effective as a straightforward narrative about a veteran Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) forced to take the psychic rookie Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) under his wing on a very bad day. In the massive irradiated wasteland of futuristic America, the vast metropolis of Mega-City One stands, housing 800 million citizens and 17,000 crimes daily. The Judges keep what order they can by immediately punishing infractions with on-the-spot death. Plagued by a new drug known as Slow-Mo, which tricks the brain into seeing the world at a fraction of its normal speed, Dredd and Anderson are called into the 200-story slum tower block Peach Trees, where several murders have been reported. They find a tower run by Ma Ma Madrigal (Lena Headey), a former prostitute turned gang lord, who runs the biggest distribution of Slow-Mo out of her fiefdom. Locked in the tower with scores of itchy trigger fingers, and a prisoner (Wood Harris) in tow, the Judges must fight their way to the top and see that justice is done.

Dredd has a number of similarities to last year’s surprise Indonesian hit The Raid (2011), and indeed their basic premises of a handful of cops in a well-armed block are identical. Yet Garland’s script immediately distinguishes itself by taking itself far less seriously, not treating the material lightly but rather finding the ironic humour that serves as a major selling point in the original comics. The concept of the “block wars” has long been a staple in the Judge Dredd source material, and here it serves as a playground for an endless series of bloody deaths, each one escalating in the splatter factor. Rather than feeling like a relentless video game, one where everybody is a NPC, the black-and-white attitude of Dredd grounds the picture with an unwavering brutality that doesn’t let up until the very end.

Much of this is attributable to the compelling central character, Urban makes a terrific Dredd, all the more impressive given that he is acting entirely from the bottom half of his face. Wearing his trademark helmet for the duration of the film this time around, Urban gives a masterclass in economy of movement. Thirlby, in a rare relatable performance, is there to provide accessibility for the average audience member, and achieves this without excessive exposition. Dredd further distinguishes itself from The Raid with the addition of a suitably compelling villain in the Patti Smith inspired character from Heady. Already a genre favourite thanks to her Game of Thrones role, the scarred block lord exudes a cruel and casual indifference, but her immediately at odds with the black-letter law Dredd. Yet it is in watching the Judge begin to realise the folly of his totalitarian system over the course of the film that is one of the real joys for fans.

With a look that is equal parts Blade Runner (1982) and western, Dredd is a satisfying union of comic book and cinematic flair. Largely said to be co-directed and edited by writer Garland, instead of director Pete Travis, we finally get a reasonable use for slow-motion and 3D, giving us a visual interpretation of the comics that could only exist on film, but is wholly indebted to its origins. Shot in South Africa with a comparatively small budget of $45, every bit of it can be seen on-screen, not wasting a single moment of this opportunity to get it right. While some might have cause to complain about the excessive nature of the violence, it would be like calling the sun “too hot”. Dredd is a film that knows its audience and fulfils its promise and purpose, gleefully kicking down the door and leaving doubters in a bloody pulp.

Dredd is released in Australia on 25 October 2012 from Icon Film Distribution.

Best Film Posters of September 2012

It’s the end of the month, so it is time to reflect, relax and rewind our way back through the one-sheets, banners, promotional artwork and posters released in the last calendar month, highlighting some of the ones we though were noteworthy. It’s a little section we like to call Best Posters.

The art of the poster is back and we’re loving it as the painted poster revisits our pages with gusto. Plus, someone better cut Saul Bass a cheque this month, as he has “inspired” one of two of our best. We still love them though.

The American Scream poster - Johnny Sampson

The American Scream – Artist: Johnny Sampson

From the artist’s Tumblr account: “Saw a rough edit of this movie and loved it. It’s about 4 different “home haunters” and their passion for Halloween. It’s also about following your dreams, no matter how silly they might be. Brought to you by the same people behind “Best Worst Movie”, directed and produced by Michael Paul Stephenson”.

    Camion poster - Karine Savard

    Camion – Artist: Karine Savard

One of several posters for Canadian Rafaël Ouellet’s award-winning new film, that recently screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).  We love the minimalism of this, incorporating the title into the tire tracks. While undoubtedly not a direct influence on the design, we couldn’t help but me reminded of The Penguin Empire‘s poster for Blame.

    Collection poster

    The Collection

If the purpose of a film poster is to grab the attention of the viewer, then this first poster for The Collection does just that. It might not be for all tastes, but like the posters for The Human Centipede series before it, it celebrates the grotesque and exposes it to the harsh blue light of day.

Do Not Disturb poster - Mlle Affiche

Do Not Disturb – Artist: Mlle Affiche

Nothing screams film poster like a cartoon nipple cripple. Nothing.

    Dredd 3D - Mondo poster - Jock

    Dredd 3D – Artist: Jock

Comic book artist Jock has been featured in this column before, with his Mondo poster for The Dark Knight Rises, and this month he re-teams with the Alamo Drafthouse to lay down the law on a special poster for the character on the latest adaptation for the 2000 AD character.

    Dust Up poster

Dust Up – Artist: Akiko Stehrenberger

Painted posters are back this month! Stehrenberger has gained some attention over the last few years with posters for Father’s Day and the Funny Games remake. With this one-sheet, Stehrenberger takes a leaf out of her recent poster for Case di Mi Padre. The tri-fold is a nice touch to add that retro flavour.

È stato il figlio poster - Federico Mauro

È stato il figlio – Artist: Federico Mauro

Another poster for a film that will not get a huge release outside of its native territory, but the poster ensures that we’ll take a look at it. Federico Mauro has a very Saul Bass inspired design for this poster. By inspired, we mean that it has wholesale taken his design for Anatomy of a Murder. Nevertheless, a cool design remains a cool design.

    Frankenweenie IMAX poster

    Frankenweenie – Artist: Tim Burton

Remaking his own short film as a feature-length stop-motion animated film, an original Burton sketch graces this IMAX exclusive poster for the upcoming Frankenweenie. Only those attending those sessions can grab this poster, so keep an eye out on eBay for this gem of a poster.

Hitchcock poster - Anthony Hopkins - Bemis Balkind

    Hitchcock – Artist: Bemis Balkind

To paraphrase Homer Simpson, this poster looks like the things they look like. The only thing more spooky than how much Anthony Hopkins looks like The Master of Suspense is how much this poster smacks of classic Hitch. While there is a flurry of activity around Hitchcock biopics at the moment, this poster takes the cake.

    Inheritance poster

    Inheritance – Artist: Aurélie Huet

Keeping it international here at the Bits, we’re digging on the rotoscoped vibe that this poster is giving off. The minimalist design is all about the blue, and it’s lovely to see what can be done with just a few layers of the bluest of blues. The fighter jets flying overhead sit in contrast with the family portrait in the front. Did we also mention blue?

Jurassic Park - Kevin Tong Mondo poster

Jurassic Park – Artist: Kevin Tong

How many Jurassic Park posters is this for Mondo now? It seems like a lot. At any rate, any excuse for a new Kevin Tong poster, all with requisite shapes and colours. He continues with a variation on his themes, and it is good to see that all of the nice dinosaurs have been included, and only one scary one up the back. All the dinosaurs up the front are all like “Dude, you’re going the wrong way!” and he’s all like “The colours, man! The colours!”

Looper - Mondo poster - Martin Ansin

    Looper – Artist: Martin Ansin

The film Looper plays with the concept of duality, and this is where Martin Ansin steps in with another fine print for the folks at Mondo. Using the characteristic lines we’ve seen in some of his other work, he splits the images with a two-tone colour scheme as well. The watch, we think, has something to do with time. That guy at the back looks just like Bruce Willis, right?

    The Master poster - France

    The Master

Before anybody saw a frame of footage, Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film was already being overly praised by real critics and Internet critics alike. This international poster goes the ink blot test. We think we see a pair of eyes and some ink, but we could be wrong. The backwards title is distracting. We’ve not seen The Master, but we’re happy to give it five stars now if it’s easier?

Monster Fest 2012 poster - Tom Hodge (The Dude Designs)

Monster Fest 2012 – Artist: Tom Hodge (The Dude Designs)

Hodge has had an incredibly busy month this September, with at least three column worthy posters. Yet this poster has a local flavour as well, hyping the Melbourne-based Monster Fest. From Hodge’s blog: “The concept was to create a classic film poster design based on the monster geisha character they have made for this promo short created by Isabel Peppard as the face of the fest for 2012…Its a straight down the line celebration of classic exploitation, monster, horror design to really drive home that film style vibe for the folks and as a fun poster momentum of the festival”.

Nosferatu - Christopher Cox for Changethethought

    Nosferatu – Artist: Christopher Cox

The Nosferatu poster was designed and illustrated by Changethethought artist and founder Christopher Cox. This is one of several screen prints done for the series, some adding a blood red border while others have an excessive amount of glow paint to give this an after dark glow.

    Pain and Gain poster

Pain and Gain – Designers: BLT Communications, LLC

This one is kind of cute. Designing a film about weight lifting to look like that weight gain powder may either be genius, or the best thing about a film starring Marky Mark and The Rock.

    Stand Up Guys poster

Stand Up Guys – Designers: Works ADV

What is it? Saul Bass appreciation month? Or are silhouettes just big this season? Even more distinct for the folks at Works ADV, who have traditionally done very Photoshop-heavy hero shots for big blockbuster films of the summer.

  • Karl Urban Visits Australia for Dredd Premiere on Gold Coast

Karl Urban Visits Australia for Dredd Premiere on Gold Coast

Dredd poster - AustraliaIcon Film Distribution together with Jupiters Hotel & Casino have announced the Australian Premiere of Dredd 3D will be held in Jupiters Theatre at the Gold Coast on Monday 15 October 2012. Judge Dredd himself, Karl Urban, will be in attendance to walk the red carpet at the newly redeveloped

The new $20 million redevelopment to Jupiters Theatre has already hosted film premieres, and recently launched the venue’s 3D cinema capabilities. Arrivals will begin from 6:45pm on the day.

Alex Garland and director Pete Travis bring the world of Dredd to life from the long-running British science fiction anthology 2000 AD, as it takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, where Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of the elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot. The film also stars Lena Headey and Olivia Thirlby.

Dredd recently opened at Number 1 at the UK Box Office earlier this month, and will be released in Australian cinemas by Icon Film Distribution on October 25, 2012. There will also be a Popcorn Taxi screening on 16 October 2012 in Sydney for those of you not game to make it up to the Gold Coast.

  • New Dredd Motion Poster Passes Sentence

New Dredd Motion Poster Passes Sentence

Dredd, the latest adaptation of the 2000 AD comic featuring the badass to beat all badasses, will be taking Judge Dredd to San Diego Comic Con next week. To celebrate, this new motion poster has been released (via Bleeding Cool).

The motion is simplicity itself, but is quintessential Dredd. After the trailer dropped last month, we all agreed itlooks damn cool, with Karl Urban capturing everyone’s favourite gravelly Judge, albeit slightly reminiscent of The Raid. Mind you, anybody could be under than helmet. Even you. Is it you? It’s you isn’t it?

This is quietly shaping up to be one of the bigger geek events of the year. While the fan-base may not be as huge as The Dark Knight Rises, the 2000 AD fans are incredibly dedicated.

Dredd is released in Australia on 25 October 2012 from Icon. It comes to UK screens on 7 September.

  • Best Film Posters of June 2012

Best Film Posters of June 2012

It’s the end of the month, so it is time to reflect, relax and rewind our way back through the one-sheets, banners, promotional artwork and posters released in the last calendar month, highlighting some of the ones we though were noteworthy. It’s a little section we like to call Best Posters.

The poster for the anti-corporate film Branded has cracked open our collective noggins and splattered them all over a city, with only a suited man with an axe to defend us from their wicked ways. Taking the concepts of Naomi Klein’s book No Logo to its logical extremes, designers Art Machine, A Trailer Park Company, envisages a world where brands run amok. Actually, this is exactly like the “Attack of the 50-Foot Eyesores” segment from the “Treehouse of Horror VI” episode of The Simpsons. Where’s Paul Anka when you need him? Just don’t look.

    Branded poster

Tom Hodge, under the moniker The Dude Designs, has revealed his poster for Frankenstein Created Bikers, a horror film due out next year from James Bickert. Every month, Hodge continues to give us something awesome to look at, and June is no exception. Over at his blog, Hodge explains the poster in detail:  “I knew the sexy dynamite lady had to be central and i thought what could be a more OTT, cheesy, sexy with a 70s vibe than some outlaw bikers riding forth from out from between a girls fishnet suspendered thighs…”.

Frankenstein Created Bikers poster (Tom Hodge) - Nude Biker Chick

The teaser poster for Dredd, the latest film to adapt the 2000 ADcomic book character Judge Dredd. It is the definition of minimalist, if you ignore the guy in the red and cold suit in the middle. It’s black on black on black, and it couldn’t seem more cool if it tried. This one comes to us from Ignition Print, who have done some outstanding work this year with The Cabin in the Woods, The Dark Knight Rises and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

    Dredd (2012) poster

The always reliable J.C. Richard is behind the Dragonslayer (1981) poster, inspired by the Disney and Paramount co-production that was something a little bit different for both studios at the time. J.C. Richard was clearly inspired by the film, and over at the Mondo blog he talks at great length about his inspiration for the poster.

Dragonslayer - Mondo poster - JC Richard.

The poster for It’s A Disaster is anything but, hijacking a well-worn recruitment poster, sticking it in a Hazmat suit and quaffing a flute of the finest orange champagne available. The faux aged look of the one-sheet caps it off nicely, although we do feel that the titles could have been separated from the image a little more. Either way, we feel that we’re adequately prepared for the oncoming event, and will remain indoors until it is over.

    It's A Disaster poster

Katy Perry has a movie coming out, don’t you know? Nothing screams movies like popcorn, and nothing screams louder than Katy Perry fans. The poster showcases both of the film’s best assets. You can interpret that any way you like. Keep in mind that the film is called Part of Me 3D. Careful, you’ll have your eye out.

Katy Perry: Part of Me poster 2

The month also revealed a new poster for Rian Johnson’s time-travel film Looper, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt. The poster does everything that a teaser poster should: it shows you the door (quite literally), and invites you to walk through it. We seen the machine in an ethereal glow of white and blue light, and something piled inside daring us to take a closer look. The tagline of “Face Your Future. Fight Your Past” seems contradictory, but this is a time travel film after all, and you have to be careful of those wibbly wobbly timey wimey bits.

    Looper - poster 2

Transmission Films unveiled the one-sheet for Cate Shortland’s Lore, for its premiere at the Sydney Film Festival. Lore, from Somersault director Cate Shortland, is set in the spring of 1945 as the German front collapses and the Allied forces take control over Hitler’s country. Lore is based on the Man Brooker Prize-nominated novel The Dark Room by Rachel Seiffert. This is the work of Australian artist Jeremy Saunders, who has graced us with similarly beautiful posters in the past. The stunning beauty of the face is contrasted with hint of a Swastika waving behind her.

    Lore poster - Cate Shortland

Dropping this week, along with a trailer, the poster for RZA’s The Man With the Iron Fists is one of the standouts for the month. It’s difficult to know where to start on this poster, as it is one of the busiest we have in this month’s lineup. Another one from the good people at Ignition Print, it has to feature one of the best taglines of the year as well: “You Can’t Spell Kung Fu Without F and U”. Right on, brother.

The Man with the Iron Fists

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Outside of the Sydney Film Festival, that is. The 2012 Melbourne International Film Festival, or MIFF for those who speak the street lingo, is an endurance test. Cramming thousands of sweaty film buffs into small spaces over the course of two weeks, radically altering postures with those seats in that cinema on Russell Street. The victorious arm holding aloft might represent a treasure found, as the tagline would imply, but we prefer to think of the triumph coming by simply making it out alive at the other end.

    MIFF 2012 Campaign Art

There are some characters who are so iconic, you only need to catch them in profile to know who they are: Indiana Jones. Darth Vader. James Bond. Paddington Bear. Designers The Refinery recognise that the barest (“bearest”?) of silhouettes is all we need to know that the little figure on the station in his wellys, duffle coat and suitcase is none other than the marmalade sandwich loving teddy who has arrived by way of darkest Peru. The only tragedy is that we have to wait until 2014. The adventure is not about to begin at all!

    Paddington Bear Movie Poster (2014)

Our good friends at Hopko Designs have sent us their latest creation, another poster for Ridley’s Scott epic sci-fi film Prometheus. Scott Hopko let us know that he “can’t stop thinking about the movie”, and seems to have been inspired by the religious aspects of the film. While they aren’t overt in Damon Lindeloff’s script, Scott and other members of the cast have certainly been referencing that in recent interviews. Casting Noomi Rapace as Mary, with the whole world literally in her hands, speaks volumes about some of the themes that people will be discussing about this film for some time to come.

    Prometheus Hopko Designs poster

Australian duo Sonny Day and Biddy Maroney, collectively known as We Buy Your Kids, are behind the retro-future of the Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. It’s what the future looked like back in the 1960s, man. There’s so much going on there, it’s hard to know where to start, including Khan’s distinctive fringe forming something of an optical illusion at the top of the page. If somebody wants to donate one of these posters to us, we’d be eternally grateful.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - Mondo poster - We Buy Your Kids

There’s been a total of eight posters (so far) from the Total Recall viral campaign, which have been appearing on billboards and bus shelters around the US. The posters are by designers cold open, who did that terrific campaign for A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas last year. Most of them are about making your fantasies real, but the final one is PSA about the dangers of memory tampering. It’s just coolness in one-sheet form.

Total Recall Viral posters - Rekall

Gravillis Inc., who appeared in last month’s round up, struck on a genius idea for this horror poster for V/H/S. Take a collection of video tapes (remember them?), stack them up high, and let the handwritten labels form a skull. The very simple concept is a highly original one, and something that could only be done with the distinctive colour scheme of the old blank video sleeves. We tried doing this with out DVD and Blu-ray collection, but it kept looking like Hello Kitty for no good reason.

First Full Trailer for Dredd Arrives

Dredd (2012) posterTotal Film has released the first full trailer for Dredd, the latest adaptation of the 2000 AD comic featuring the badass to beat all badasses, Judge Dredd. It looks damn cool too, with Karl Urban capturing everyone’s favourite gravelly Judge, albeit slightly reminiscent of The Raid.

The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One- a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.

Dredd is released in Australia on 25 October 2012 from Icon. It comes to UK screens on 7 September.

JoBlo has revealed the teaser poster for Dredd, the latest film to adapt the 2000 AD comic book character Judge Dredd. It is the definition of minimalist, if you ignore the guy in the red and cold suit in the middle. It’s black on black on black, and it couldn’t seem more cool if it tried. There’s also four new new hi-res photos of Karl Urban and Lena Heady from Movies.ie.
