Podcast: Hell is for Hyphenates – January 2012

Fistful of Dollars posterLast week, we had the distinct pleasure of being a guest on Hell Is For Hyphenates, a monthly movie podcast designed for cinema addicts who have absolutely no plans to kick the habit. Hosted by Lee Zachariah and Paul Anthony Nelson, each episode features a critique of the month’s releases, a burning issue and a featured filmmaker.

Film critic Richard Gray joins us to talk about why Australia’s January releases are so much better than America’s, discuss why so many recent biopics of controversial political figures are lightweight puff pieces, and look at the small but unparalleled filmography of Spaghetti Western maestro Sergio Leone.

We like to thank Lee and Paul for inviting us on the show, and for the general hospitality and geek-worthy conversations had in and around the suburbs of Melbourne.

You can check out more of their work on Hell is For Hyphenates, and the other links above.

    What Else We’ve Been Watching

Films covered this week are “Deadly Pursuit” (AKA “Shoot To Kill”), “Urban Legend” and Josh’s Bargain Basement Film – “Marathon Man”.

    Feature Film Review

‘Underworld: Awakening’ directed by Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein. It is written by Len Wiseman & John Hlavin and J. Michael Straczynski and Allison Burnett based on a story by Len Wiseman based in turn on characters created by Kevin Grevioux, Len Wiseman & Danny McBride. It stars Kate Beckinsale, Stephen Rea, Michael Ealy, Theo James, India Eisley, Kris Holden-Ried & Charles Dance.

When human forces discover the existence of the Vampire and Lycan clans, a war to eradicate both species commences. The vampire warrioress Selene leads the battle against humankind. Source: IMDB

Our Verdict: Best Underworld film of the series. This is exactly what the series needed, a huge injection of action and energy. Beckinsale shines as the vampire warrior Seline.

    What We’ve Been Watching:

A collection of other things we’ve been watching this week.

    Feature Film Review:

‘Puss in Boots’ directed by Chris Miller and written by David H. Steinberg, Jon Zack and Tom Wheeler from a story by Will Davies and Brian Lynch which is based on a character by Charles Perrault. It stars the voices of Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Billy Bob Thornton, Amy Sedaris and Zack Galifianakis.

Long before he even met Shrek, the notorious fighter, lover and outlaw Puss in Boots becomes a hero when he sets off on an adventure with the tough and street smart Kitty Softpaws and the mastermind Humpty Dumpty to save his town. This is the true story of The Cat, The Myth, The Legend… The Boots. Source: Dreamworks/Paramount

Our Verdict: David and Richard enjoyed it and felt that it was better than the last two “Shrek” films. Josh enjoyed parts of it but over all felt that he was the wrong audience for the film.

Our Verdict: A highly recommended, genre bending, English film that will make you laugh, jump and cheer along as the young cast do battle with the alien threat. A must see.

    Lists of Five

This week our Lists of Five: Five Great Death Scenes. It’s not that we are morbid but there is something cool about a great and imaginative death scene in movies… here are five of them.

Just a reminder, because we never like to just make things easy on ourselves, our lists are not necessarily top five lists, they are more or a less a list of film recommendations within the theme of the list.
