Two new clips from ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’

Captain America: The First Avenger is only a week away from hitting Australian cinemas, and Paramount have been kind enough to send over two brand-new clips from the film and the final Australia one-sheet poster.

In the first of these, we witness the birth of the Cap, or as the title of the clip suggests, his rebirth as a “taller” and stronger version of Steve Rogers. Immediately following this is a clip showing Captain America in action, with the simply titled “Shield Fight”. It shows off the fighting sequences in the film, and some of the impressive special effects we can expect. Our buzz hasn’t waned at all, what about yours?

    Trailer and Poster: ‘The Guard’

Sydney Film Festival favourite, John Michael McDonagh’s The Guard, makes its way to Australian cinemas next month, and Transmission has sent over the official Australian trailer for the film.

Three drug-dealers are planning to land half a billion dollars’ worth of cocaine off the west coast of Ireland. The only men standing in their way are straight-laced FBI Agent Wendell Everett (Don Cheadle) and Gerry Boyle (Brendan Gleeson), an unconventional, hard-living and over-the-hill Galway Guard with a dying mother, a fondness for prostitutes and a heightened sense of the absurd.

Our Sarah Ward said this about the film: “Complete with a stellar turn from Brendan Gleeson, darkly humorous crime comedy The Guard is quite possibly the funniest film of the festival – and the year”.

  • Poster for Jeff Nichols’ ‘Take Shelter’

Poster for Jeff Nichols’ ‘Take Shelter’

We were suitably impressed by Jeff Nichols’ sophomore effort Take Shelter when we saw it back in June at the Sydney Film Festival. Now thanks to Movieline we can have a look at the suitably minimalist US poster for the psychological thriller and (possible) disaster film. Or is it? That would be spoiling the fun though, wouldn’t it?

At the time we called it “simply astounding” and “a film that totally captures the zeitgeist”. Yes, we are desperate for a pull-quote. Clearly neither of those made it onto the US poster below. Perhaps we can always hold out hope for the eventual Australian release.

  • First Look: Martin Scorsese’s ‘Hugo’ trailer and poster

First Look: Martin Scorsese’s ‘Hugo’ trailer and poster

Few names carry as much weight as Martin Scorsese, and his latest film Hugo (rechristened from Hugo Cabret) was easily one of our most anticipated films of 2011. Already a ‘must see’ list for its odd collection of cast members ranging from Chloe Moretz (Kick AssLet Me In) to Sacha Baron Cohen (Bruno), with Christopher Lee, Ben Kinglsey, Ray Winstone and Emily Mortimer in between, this new trailer and the promise of it being the first 3D Martin Scorsese film could be the start of something wonderful…although the trailer is a little too twee for our liking.

Hugo tells the story of an orphan boy living a secret life in the walls of a Paris train station. With the help of an eccentric girl, he searches for the answer to a mystery linking the father he recently lost, the ill-tempered toy shop owner living below him and a heart shaped lock, seemingly without a key. Based on Brian Selznick’s award winning and imaginative New York Times bestseller, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, this magical tale is Academy Award(R)-winner Martin Scorsese’s first film shot in 3D.

First Look: ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ poster revealed

The Dark Knight Rises is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated films of 2012, and with its teaser trailer set to play in front of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in cinemas, Warner goes and drops the teaser poster in our laps this fine July day for the third film in Christopher Nolan‘s Batman series.

For all of the viral campaigns, image leaks, casting decisions and other rumours, this poster just screams “iconic”, and its crumbling Gotham walls give us hints of the devastation and brutality that Bruce Wayne/Batman, portrayed by Christian Bale, will have to face when he in rises in mid-2012.

The film also stars Anne Hathaway, as Selina Kyle; Tom Hardy, as Bane; Oscar® winner Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose), as Miranda Tate; and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, as John Blake.

Returning to the main cast, Oscar® winner Michael Caine plays Alfred; Gary Oldman is Commissioner Gordon; and Oscar® winner Morgan Freeman reprises the role of Lucius Fox.

Now doesn’t this poster remind you just a little bit of Inception?

First Look: 2 New Posters for ‘Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows’

Warner, via Yahoo!, has revealed two new character posters for the forthcoming Sherlock Holmes sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

The film once again teams up director Guy Ritchie with Robert Downey Jr. as the titular detective, and Jude Law as his faithful sidekick Watson, as they hunt down the nefarious Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris, TV’s Mad Men). This time they are joined by Sim (Noomi Rapace, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest), Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams, Morning Glory) and the incomparable Stephen Fry as Holmes’ brother Mycroft.

  • First Look: ‘Footloose’ Trailer and International Poster

First Look: ‘Footloose’ Trailer and International Poster

The wave of remakes, sequels and reboots, it was inevitable that Footloose would eventually get the remake treatment. The trailer has been playing across the web all weekend, and now thanks to Paramount Australia, we have the official local version – complete with exploding bus –  to share with our readers. We’ve also included the brand-new international poster for the new film.

Made for the modern audience, the cast rocking the Ray Bans, dancing to hip hop, kicking it in converse and those red boots have taken this film to a whole new place. Julianne Hough plays Ariel and Kenny Wormald, Ren is dubbed to be the next Kevin Bacon. Haven’t heard of many of the actors? That’s because this film represents many dancers come actors to replicate and enhance the classic that is Footloose.

Just for historical reasons, and for a bit of fun, here’s the trailer to the original Footloose, with decidedly fewer bus explosions. It’s a little bit more country to boot:

Paramount has also included the new international trailer, which differs significantly from the one we posted on out 2011 Release Guide late last week.

New ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ Trailer and Poster

Captain America: The First Avenger may only be a month away from release, but that hasn’t stopped Marvel and Paramount from releasing a brand new trailer and poster in the last 24 hours.

The new trailer, courtesy of Paramount Australia, comes complete with more footage from the film, a pumping soundtrack from Tool and perhaps more importantly, more Tommy Lee Jones.

UPDATE (29/6/11): We have replaced the Yahoo! trailer with the official Australian release.

Captain America: The First Avenger Trailer F by Paramount_Australia

The new poster for Captain America: The First Avenger isn’t quite as fun as the recently released retro poster, in which the Cap is seen punching out Hitler, but it retains a certain handmade iconic charm that has been making its way into Marvel posters of late.
