‘Death Row Family’: English subtitled trailer for Yuki Kobayashi’s bonkers new film

The absolutely bonkers looking DEATH ROW FAMILY (全員死刑) has had a Japanese trailer floating around for a few weeks. Now Nikkatsu has released an English subtitled version of the trailer online. It still looks bonkers.

Based on the non-fiction novel by Tomohiko Suzuki, it follows Takanori (Shotaro Mamiya), the son of a yakuza boss who spent several years in jail for a crime he didn’t commit. After he teams up to rob a wealthy family who runs a loan shark operation, a killing begets more violence and death for the ‘family.’

Director/writer Yuki Kobayashi is known for last year’s Kamikaze Cowboy, following a group who buys a scooter and gets drawn into a dark world. This is his second film, and is produced for the infamous Nikkatsu by the legendary Yoshihiro Nishimura (Mutant Girls Squad, Meatball Machine Kodoku).

DEATH ROW FAMILY is released in Japan on 18 November 2017, and the existence of an English trailer is indicative that it may get a wider release outside of Japan.  In fact, it is making it’s world premiere on 14 September 2017 in France at the L’Étrange Festival

The stylish trailer gives us an indication of this being a crime action drama on a grand scale, and the type of thing that will hopefully get a contemporaneous release here in Australia.

  • ‘Thor: Ragnarok’: Doctor Strange appears in Japanese trailer

‘Thor: Ragnarok’: Doctor Strange appears in Japanese trailer

We already knew Taika Waititi’s take on Thor was going to be strange, but we didn’t know just how much so until the Japanese trailer for THOR: RAGNAROK was released. Featuring a prominent cameo from Benedict Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme, you can check it out below.

The character was last seen in the 2016 film Doctor Strange, which also featured a mid-credits sequence in which Strange decides to help Thor, who has brought his brother Loki to Earth to search for their missing father Odin. So it would seem that this scene leads directly into the events of the film.

The 17th feature film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since its launch in 2008, it stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, Mark Ruffalo, and Anthony Hopkins. Filmed locally, it will release in Australia on 26 October 2017 from Disney, before being unleashed on the US on 2 November.

  • Official ‘It’ trailer relieves us of our collective bejesuses

Official ‘It’ trailer relieves us of our collective bejesuses

    coulrophobia
    [kool-ruh-foh-bee-uh]
    noun
    1. an abnormal fear of clowns.
    2. the condition resulting from watching this trailer.

Actually, is it abnormal to fear clowns? The latest adaptation of Stephen King’s IT certainly makes no case for it, playing straight into our subconscious fears and scaring the bejesus out of us. If you find that you have no bejesus, it’s because of this trailer.

Various research indicates that the fear comes from the notion of a painted face, or the transgressive behaviour of the harlequins of mirth. We place the blame instead squarely on King’s Pennywise, who has once again made us very afraid of sewer drains as well. Seriously, Stephen: is nothing sacred?

In Andrés Muschietti’s latest version, we finally get to hear Bill Skarsgård’s voice as Pennywise. Set in the fictional town of Derry,Maine, a group of young kids are faced with their biggest fears when they square off against the evil clown, whose history of murder and violence dates back for centuries.

IT is released in Australia on 7 September 2017 from Roadshow Films.

  • ‘Girls Trip’ gets Australian release date of 31 August, new trailer

‘Girls Trip’ gets Australian release date of 31 August, new trailer

GIRLS TRIP just had an excellent opening weekend in the US and Universal Pictures Australia has announced that they will be releasing it locally on 31 August.

Following its debut at the American Black Film Festival in Miami, director Malcolm D. Lee’s film opened to rave reviews and interviews in the US this week. Starring Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett Smith, Tiffany Haddish, and Queen Latifah, it follows four lifelong friends who travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival. Sisterhoods are rekindled, and wild sides are rediscovered.

The film has already got a rep for being a boundary-pushing and edgy comedy, with Variety favourably comparing it to Bridesmaids and other recent comedies. It opened to $30 million in the US against films like Dunkirk and Valerian, which is an impressive feat given its $19 million budget.

    Check out the trailer below.

  • CW/DC TV: ‘Arrow’, ‘The Flash’, ‘Legends of Tomorrow’, ‘Supergirl’ Comic-Con Trailers

CW/DC TV: ‘Arrow’, ‘The Flash’, ‘Legends of Tomorrow’, ‘Supergirl’ Comic-Con Trailers

The San Diego Comic-Con has given us new trailers for the entire slate of CW TV shows with the ‘Arrowverse’ of Greg Berlanti productions.

Acting as recaps and sizzle reels for the forthcoming seasons, we get an early look atARROWSUPERGIRL,THE FLASH and LEGENDS OF TOMORROW.

All of the shows will be returning in October 2017, with the full CW Fall premiere dates announced back in June.

    Arrow: Season 6

The trailer kicks off with a recap of Season 5, and the explosive finale that left the fate of the entire cast in jeopardy. The brief footage we season from the new season shows Oliver reconnecting with his son, and facing off once again with Slade Wilson/Deathstroke.

    The Flash: Season 4

The prospect of a world without a Flash was where we were left at the end of Season 3, and the supporting characters in this trailer promise a sharper and funnier approach to the source material. Maybe we really did need a break from Barry’s self-flagellation?

    Legends of Tomorrow: Season 3

At the end of the previous season, the Legends had broken time. This massive mash-up season looks set to play with that concept, giving us everything from dinosaurs to clowns, and other terrifying things in between. This is definitely the most fun of all the DC TV shows on the CW right now.

    Supergirl: Season 3

While Kara’s constant questioning of herself was one of the major issues of the second season, in this trailer she decides to put her human identity away and focus on being Supergirl. A new threat may help galvanize Kara into a decision. Adrian Pasdar makes a brief appearance as “Morgan Edge, a ruthless real estate developer who will stop at nothing to get what he wants.”

  • ‘That’s Not Me’ gets a trailer, releases nationally 7 September

‘That’s Not Me’ gets a trailer, releases nationally 7 September

Palace Cinemas have released a trailer for the Australian comedy THAT’S NOT ME, which is releasing exclusively to their cinemas on 7 September. The debut feature from director Gregory Erdstein, co-written with lead actor Alice Foulcher, it also stars Belinda Misevski and Isabel Lucas. It’s definitely one worth checking out.

In the film, Polly (played by Foulcher) dreams of being a big Hollywood star, but her efforts are partly self-sabotaged by her terminal indecision. It also doesn’t help that her identical twin sister Amy has just landed an HBO series opposite Jared Leto. With waning parental support, coupled with being fired from her job in a cinema, even Polly’s attempt to go to LA backfires. To make matters worse, she keeps losing gigs after getting mistaken for her sister.

We caught this one at the Sydney Film Festival this year, and found that it was a “heartfelt and quirky Aussie comedy about finding your place in the world, with some great inside industry references for film fans and aspiring stars alike.”

You can read our full review of the film, and then check out the trailer below. Or do those things in whatever order you feel is necessary.
