Alan Taylor to direct Thor 2

Deadline reports that after losing Patty Jenkins earlier this month, Marvel Studios have moved swiftly to replace the Monster director with Emmy Award-winning Alan Taylor on Thor 2.

As rumoured, Alan Taylor is one of the directors on HBO’s Game of Thrones, but has also worked on the pilot of the ill-fated The Playboy Club, AMC’s Mad Men and HBO productions Boardwalk Empire, Deadwood, Carnivàle, Sex ad the City and has a career that goes back to Oz and the superior Homicide: Life on the Streets. He won an Emmy for his work on The Sopranos.

His feature resume is thin, with only the indie features Palookaville (1995) and Kill the Poor (2003) to his name, but his abilities to work quickly with his quality productions is probably one of the principal reasons Marvel Studios and Disney have selected him for this prestige job. Marvel have done incredibly well out of directors experienced in other fields, although he will have big shoes to fill in Thor‘s Kenneth Branagh.

Thor 2 is due to hit cinemas on 15 November 2013 from Disney. It will be part of a second cycle of films that will ultimately lead to a sequel to next year’s The Avengers.
