Sony announces ‘Venom’ film for October 2018

As soon as Warner left the waters of 5 October 2018 free of Aquaman, the Sony symbiont VENOM latched itself onto the same date.

The film has long been planned since the release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, although the Marvel Studios deal that allowed Spider-Man to appear in Captain America: Civil War put future Spider-related projects on the backburner. While no cast or crew have been announced, it appears to be very much back on the table. The dream of the 90s is alive at Sony.

Spider-Man will next be seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe entry Spider-Man: Homecoming this July, with Tom Holland playing Peter Parker/Spider-Man.  Venom was last seen on screen in Sam Raimi’s unconnected Spider-Man 3, portrayed by Topher Grace.

This leaves a lot of questions though. If the new Venom film is connected to the Spider-Man universe, then does this mean Venom is also part of the MCU? If not, then is Venom created by an origin story completed unrelated to the wallcrawler?

In related news, Marvel Comics recently announced an Edge of VenomVerse mini-series (pictured below) leading up to a line-wide Venom crossover beginning in June 2017.
