Before Watchmen, one of DC Comic’s biggest events of the year, begins this Wednesday with Darwyn Cooke’s Before Watchmen: Minutemen #1. It is the first of a collection of mini-series and one-shots that will serve as a prequel to Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ seminal Watchmen story.
DC revealed a TV commercial today via EW, showcasing the new series and declaring the 35 issues to be the prequel to the “best-selling graphic novel of all time”.
We approach this with trepidation, as we’ve mentioned on Behind the Panels. While the characters are scenarios might be worth exploring on some level, and the collected talent for the series is amazing, there just really isn’t any pressing need for the series either. Moore gave us all the background information we needed in his carefully detailed supporting materials interspersed throughout the original 12-issue arc.
