‘Her Love Boils Bathwater’ selected as Japan’s Oscar bid

Her Love Boils Bathwater (湯を沸かすほどの熱い愛) posterVariety reports that HER LOVE BOILS BATHWATER (湯を沸かすほどの熱い愛) has been selected as Japan’s official contender for the foreign language film Oscar. It is the Ryota Nakano second feature, following the award-winning Capturing Dad in 2012.

The film follows Futaba (Rie Miyazawa), a terminally ill woman who decides to put her daughter Azumi (Hana Sugisaki) on the right path by getting her past and her secrets in order. One of those plans is to resurrect the family’s long neglected bathhouse. 

Already the winner of three Japan Academy Prizes following its release in October last year, including Newcomer of the Year and Best Supporting Actress for Hana Sugisaki, and Bets Actress for Rie Miyazawa.

Australians will get a chance to see the film between October and December, with the Japanese Film Festival having already announced it as part of its preview program. 

In related news, South Korea’s official entry was announced to be A Taxi Driver, one of the biggest box office hits of the year in its native box office.
