We can’t say we saw this one coming. Fox continues to expand their X-Men cinematic universe with THE NEW MUTANTS, but this is not exactly the comic bookery that we imagined. In fact, director Josh Boone’s film has gone for a straight-up haunted house horror tale.
It may not be exactly what we expected, but kudos has to go to Fox for attempting to do something different with a franchise that they are going to milk like a dairy farm. It follows Deadpool and Logan as playing on the fringes of the universe established over the course of the last two decades.
Starring Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga, and Blu Hunt, it follows five young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves.
THE NEW MUTANTS were first created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod in 1982, and were in fact the first spin-off in print. The premiere graphic novel followed the success of Claremont’s The Uncanny X-Men. The series would run for 100 issues an eventually lead to X-Force, another project on the slate from the Fox franchise.
THE NEW MUTANTS was first announced back in April 2015, with Boone and Gwaltney attached since then. It has a planned release date of 13 April 2018 (12 April in Australia) from 20th Century Fox.
